If you know programming and want to get a fast start go for PHP; Easy to learn and highly efficient. You can do 80% of the work by knowing just 20% of the language.
But that would be on the server side. For the client you would like to know things like javascripts, HTML/DHTML
I myself prefer to use HTML/CSS and a little of javascripts

it is agreed with previous posts. Especially Palbano as knowing why something works will help you make things that work so much better. You dont need to be an expert, but you should definatly have a solid understanding of the general concepts involved. HTML, XML, XHTML and CSS are pretty much prerequisites and should be considered as such. Again, mastery is good, but a solid understanding is better.
When it comes to scripting languages, the more the better, but it depends on what type of developer you plan on being and who your clientelle are (going to be) ... if you are going to work in a windows shop or focus on that , then PHP and Perl arent going to be as important as ASP, .NET per se. I will say that aside for PERL, once you learn one language and get good with it... other languages will be much easier to learn. Javascript and any ECMA scripting language will all just make sense. EG. If you know/learn C/C++/C# , then Javascript and Actionscript would be simple for you. If you know PERL, them PHP will make more sense to you and be much easier to learn.
That is my 2 Cents.

You need to learn two generic type of languages, one for client scripting which is evaluated locally on your computer and the other the server side scripting which is evaluated[processed] on the server side.
<font color='maroon'>Clientside:</font> javascript,vbscript
(mostly for IIS),jscript and the most recommended ECMA script
<font color='blue'>Server side:</font>ASP, ASP.Net -->Mostly IIS servers
JSP -->Java Server Pages for Apache,WebLogic and Sun Servers
PHP -->Open source, both Unix and windows
Best advice I can give is: Please go to: http://www.w3c.org
There is no point in learning by heart, it is more like learning by doing.

Is there a way to specify a style for a Submit button by using HTML Element style...
e.g. For the INPUT ELEMENT we say:
INPUT {width:50px;} but this will aplly to submit buttons too...
Is there a way to set another style for the Submit button?

You could specify an id for the element.
<submit type="input" id="thingey">
Then, do what you need to in CSS by referencing the id.
#thingey{width:50px;}
Or, you would use the style attribute of the submit button itself.
<submit type="input" style="width: 50px;">

My ASP.NET web application has a file upload feature. I can upload files, and download those files, but the server won't let me delete them (using System.IO.File.Delete and similar), giving an error of
System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path "<omitted here>" is denied.
Anybody suggest how I might get my app to have the required permission to Delete the file? ...and, while we're at it, why can I write and read, but not delete??

Read and Write are 2 separate permissions in Windows where as Delete is probably considered Modify and your admin might not have granted you (IUSER_MachineName) access to that function.
Look into that for starters.

Hi there,
Create a jscript/vbscript function in your main page, then in your sub page you can call the function passing whatever you need, eg.
Function in sub page
<script language='JScript'>
<!--
function update(value)
{
var wndControlPage = parent;
if (wndControlPage && wndControlPage.MyFunction}
{
wndControlPage.MyFunction(value);
}
else
{
}
}
</script>
Hope this helps,
Andy

I have a small website that uses ASP session variables to store a userid/username after login.
Everything seems to work fine on most clients, except for a Windows 2000 Server machine. The session does not seem to be maintained at all. I added the following code to the main page, and every time I refresh the page, the sessionID increases, which it shouldn't do:
response.write session.sessionid
I have checked cookies, security settings and everything else I can think of, but it still doesn't work. Another computer in the same office (behind the same firewall/router) doesn't have any problem with the site.
It seems to be only this site that has a problem. It is running on IIS 4.0 on NT Server 4.0 SP6. Session state is enabled, or else it wouldn't work on any computer
Also, it seems as though this[^] person is having the same problem, but since I'm not a member, I can't see the answer
Does anyone know what the problem could be?
On a (possibly) unrelated note, I have noticed that GIF animations don't work on this computer either - even though they are enabled in the options.
Thanks

Make sure the client does not have anything blocking cookies. IE, for example, needs to be set on 'low' in Tools...Internet settings....Privacy. Make sure there is no firewall (specifically ZoneAlarm) blocking them too.
I've seen IE do the non-animating gif thing too. Eventually my gifs came back to life in Internet Explorer, and I don't know why they went 'dead' for a long time. Odd. Anyway, there is an animation counter inside animated gifs. Try setting them to some extrememly high value.

Thanks for the reply! Turns out it was ZoneAlarm - when I installed it, I chose the 14 day ZA Pro trial and when it expired I just reverted back to the regular free version.
Somehow, my site got set to not accept session cookies, and since I was now running the free version, there was no way in the UI to re-enable it! I uninstalled/reinstalled and everything's working fine now
I probably should have figured it was something like this, but ZA is so quiet now, that I just forgot about it.

Background: I'm generating an html document from a c++ program, containing a lot of tables ( in the worse case, hundreds of tables ), and I'd like to limit the size of the document to a minimum.
Is it possible to put those in a CSS file ?
now, I put the following colgroup definition for each table.
<table>
<colgroup span="2">
<col width="20%"></col>
<col width=*></col>
</colgroup>
...
</table>
Is it possible to transfer that into a CSS definition file ? if so, what would be the syntax ?
Thanks.

This is pretty simple.
once you have verified that your user is logged in, you can find his ip from the
$ip=$_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'];
Now you can store this $ip in a database to keep track of your users.
One glitch though, your users may want to access your site contents from different pcs
the ip would change in this case.
Also modem users get a new ip every time they log in. So dont just ban users who have multiple IPs

If the browser you are catering to doesn't support CSS2, you can't do it obviously.

if i am right, the latest version of Opera supports css2.1
You could use it to try out your scripts
but i would suggest that you wait till it is more standardised (IE begins to support it)
Whats the use if your code does not work on your clients PC.

Hi Asim,
Are you populating the drop-down box initially from ASP? or is it static in the HTML file?
If it's from ASP, then when you populate the drop-down see if the Form("field name") has a value, e.g.
<%
idxSelected = 0 ' the initial option you want selected
If Request.Form.Count>0 And Request.Form("idMyDD") <> "" Then
idxSelected = Request.Form("idMyDD") ' change to the selected one
End If
' generate drop-down contents
selected = ""
Response.Write("<select id='idMyDD' name='idMyDD' size='1'>" & vbCr)
For i=0 to 10
' strValue = however you want to populate...
selected = IIf(i=idxSelected, " selected", "")
Response.Write("<option value='" & i & "'" & selected & ">" & strValue & "</option>" & vbCr)
Next
Response.Write("</select>" & vbCr)
%>
Hope this helps,
Andy
