I have a small artificial life app I wrote in VB just for fun, but it's way too slow and clunky. I'm looking for a C++ guru with some time to spare who can speed it up a bit for me. My C++ has gotten rusty over the years.
The App is called Pixel Evolution. The idea is based on creatures adapting to their environments over many generations. The environment in questions is a simple image (bmp, jpg, etc.). Each pixel on the target image is a habitat which contains a single a-life pixel. The pixel's RGB values dictate his fitness for that habitat. The closer to the coresponding target image pixel the better.
A random pixel is selected and a random neighboring opponent pixel is chosen. The two pixels have a mini pixel combat and basically the pixel that is better adapted to its environment (closer to the color of the pixel at that location in the target image) wins:
Target #235, RGB(184, 251, 18)<br />
Pixel #235, RGB(232, 148, 67)<br />
Difference, RGB( 48, 103, 49) total: 200<br />
<br />
Target #135, RGB(186, 248, 20)<br />
Pixel #135, RGB(118, 4, 48)<br />
Difference, RGB( 68, 244, 28) total: 338<br />
<br />
Pixel 235 wins.<br />
Pixel 135 Dies.<br />
Pixel 235's (mutated) offspring fills square 135<br />
235 also dies leaving behind a second (mutated) offspring in its own square.<br />
<br />
If the two pixels are tied both pixels produce one offspring in their respective squares.<br />
Eventually All pixels are within 1% of the target images color, producing a pixel-for-pixel replication of the target image, with some very artistic looking variations along the way. It works fast too. You can already see a ghost of the target image within half a generation (with a random starting population), and the image is just about perfect within about 50 generations, depending on the starting population.
The original population can either be totally random, a flat color, a pattern of some sort, or another image. The app should have controls for loading the target and population images. It should have a way to adjust the mutation rate, and room for expansion into sexual reproduction (as opposed to asexual), including mate selection (fittest pixels win), and crossover of the R, G, and B genes. My app also had a funtion that saved a periodic snapshot of the population so that a video could be time-lapsed together in the end.
The whole thing took me only an hour or so to program in VB, I'm sure it would be even quicker in C++.
So how about it? Any takers? Any ideas on other features that could added to a project like this? Most importantly of all, has this been done already? I've never seen it. To the best of my knowledge it's an original idea, but I could be wrong. Please let me know. Thanks.
PS. Let me know if you want a copy of my code or VB App. It's really cool, it's just too darn slow.

This seems like it might make a neat screen saver as well.

So can you help or what?

I have some experience writing a screen saver.
I also have some experience dealing with multiple monitors.
I don't have the time right now to work on this much, however.
I merely thought that the program itself would be fun to watch as a screen saver.
If you can get it far enough along, I can help to turn it into a screen saver.

ComponentScience (we) are preparing a new component library called, "Tachyon". It is written entirely in C# for the .NET compact framework.
... and we are looking for beta testers.
All testers who actively participate will receive a free subscription to the source-code version of the product when it ships.
If you want to participate, please send an email to BetaManager@ComponentScience.net and let us know you want to help test Tachyon.
I almost forgot. The Betamanager email account has an aggressive spam protection system in place and will reject any messages with attachments. Please send simple plain-text messages only.

How about a little explanation of what the product does....

Tachyon is our first compact framework library. It is where we will focus all of our compact framework efforts moving forward.
Currently it has a mix of UI controls, as well as a few custom dialogs and even a very nice rich-ink control.
I'm afraid that until you sign our NDA, that's all I can tell you at this time.
Send me an email at betamanager@componentscience.net and I will send you the NDA straight away. Once you sign it, I will tell you how you can download the product and try it out.

Looks interesting. How does this differ from Eclipse?

The first and big difference betwen SDE and Eclipse is that SDE is being written in C# and Eclipse is written in java.
Eclipse is a mature product while SDE is in its early stage of development .The features are being added slowly but surely and the change has been barely noticable until now, a lot of features like project managment , compile services etc are already implemented
Both IDEs can be extended with packages .Packages are plug-ins that each "teach" SDE how to work with things (source code, OO models, Web content, XML, graphics, workflow processes, video) almost anything you can imagine
anyway , I like eclipse so lots of concepts from this IDEs are present on the SDE design.
Thanks for your interest and If you have further questions feel free to contact me

Hi,
I am developing a MDI application which has some graphics in its child windows. Now i want to refresh all child windows from one child where i take user input for color change for all child window background and font setting.
The change is getting affected if i minimize and then maximize whole application.
Can some one suggest on this.
Thanks in advance.

I have been looking for a good team scheduling software and it just plain doesn't seem to exist to meet what I need.
We are currently using MS Project only because it half-way does what I want.
I schedule currently 30 people for various projects (all different clients) all within the same week. We are a fast paced team and must be flexible in our schedule.
Our needs are basically... I need an easy, fast tool that will allow me to schedule, track and assign a project. I use a Gaant chart to view the projects and team members so I can see who is available at any given time. Currently, with MSProject, the only way to do this is using the Gaant chart and assign each team member as a "Major Task" and each project as a "Sub-Task". Then once the projects are completed, I move the project into another "Sub-Task" and make it a sub of the "Completed Projects". This allows me to keep all old projects from cluttering up the schedule.
There are several issues with this setup. It's very easy to accidentally move something. It doesn't allow for proper sorting of projects. I can't report well at all (not a major issue but would be nice). And although it is faster than my other methods, it is not what I want.
If anyone is interested in helping. Please let me know. dmiddlet@dreytech.com
Thanks, David

I've spent the last few years building content management systems for small to medium sized websites, and have recently been using a stable system I spent the last 18 months building by myself. I have a lot of ideas about what I'd do differently next time, what I'd like to keep and what I'd discard, etc, and what new ideas I'd like to implement if this time it was built entirely using C# and .Net. The current system uses ASP, VBScript, JScript, etc.
The thing is, I've learned from having already written over 40,000 lines of code in the current system, that this is a big job for just one person. So I've been putting my ideas down into a word document and trying to work out how I can get some help on this new project. So here I am, probing for interest!
I am particular interested in people who have a strong command over C# and the .Net framework, and are into writing clean, efficient, modularised and well abstracted code.

I have a project I want to undertake and it will be my first. I am a computer science graduate with minimal project experience. Any individual with any related skill or anyone who wants to participate in a project is welcome.
My goal for this project is to automate the data entry process used by a company I work for. I will be happy to provide more detailed explanation to interested individuals.
Overview: The work flow is as follows..
1. required information are highlighted on .tif documents by a set of employees. The highlights are color coded depending on the information. This document contain real estate deeds etc.
2. The highlighted document are then entered manually into related color related fields by another set of employees using a data entry software. The entered data is stored in a database (SQL Server).
I think the data entry process (#2) can be simplified by having a program read the highlighted field and transfer or write the information to the related colored field or database.
Of course, there are some rules on how the entries are made. Also, the highlighted document can be sloppy so the program has to be good enough to read the data with high accuracy. The program should be able to
1. read the color highlighted area
2. write it to a database or field
3. business rules will be implemented further as needed
I hope I make a little bit of sense to enable you all ask questions. I will be happy to explain further to interested individuals.
I will appreciate also if you can provide me with the best tools to accomplish this task.
