Hi, now I begin to learn network with 3 computers and connect as workgroup. I just want to know any suitable application that could use on one computer as remote desktop for the other computer without configure any other PCs.

It mean that your disk have bad sector locate on it. Try run norton antivirus or norton system suite to check for virus and your hard disk space.

My son has an Audigy Sound card installed in his computer (AMD 2.4Ghz on a Gigibytes Motherboard).
He is having problems with some drivers using the on-board sound card.
How can you ensure that the on-board sound facilities are disabled.
Did check the BIOS and sound set to Auto.
Do we:
1. Remove everthing and re-install all the sound stuff again (Cakewalk Cubase etc) and the Audigy drivers.
2. Do something else (clean reg, re-install Windows XP -Home etc)
Any suggestions, we have Norton SystemsWorks, but shows up no problems.

Why? If you want it to be disabled, set it to Disabled. If the sound card is one the BIOS doesn't recognize, it will enable the onboard circuits and create a conflict.

I thought Auto was use on-board if no dedicated Sound CArd present.
Either way still the conflict.

After you disable the onboard sound you still have to uninstall the drivers for it. Locate the onboard system in Device Manager and disable it, then restart the computer. In theory, this should prevent the drivers from loading - it doesn't always work. Sometime's the disabled device is redetected and reinstalled, and I have no idea why. If it works properly you can then return to Device Manager and remove it safely. You may also find that you have to reinstall the new card's drivers after disabling the onboard system to get a clean installation. To be certain of a clean setup it might be best to uninstall both, disable the the onboard system in BIOS, restart and reinstall the new card.
Depending on the age of the PC, there might also be a resource conflict between the sound card and other devices. Sound and video cards have always been the worst offenders in this, so be sure to check the Device Manager status for all devices, looking for a conflict. Newer PCs with bus mastering devices on PCI rarely suffer this sort of problem, but it's common on older units. It was also a problem for several years that some cards would only work in certain slots. You might try moving the card to a new home if none of the above works.

Hi everyone,
We're having a very strange networking problem with one of our servers today, and I'm totally clueless about it, I was just hoping that some of you might have an idea on what is happening.
So we have this Windows 2003 server with a single NIC and several IP addresses assigned to it. One major website is using one IP address (A), and several small sites share another IP address (B). What happened this morning (and yesterday too) is that we cannot access the HTTP server, nor the POP3 and SMTP server at the IP B, but the website as well as the mail server at IP A works just fine. What is more confusing, we can ping both IPs without a problem.
I asked some of my friends here in Slovakia, UK and US to test both IPs, and all of them could access websites at both IPs, except for one of them who had the same problem as we had, but couldn't even ping IP B. They have a different ISP, and it started to work for them after a few minutes. But we're still having the same problem.
Does anyone have any idea what can be causing this? I'm absolutely clueless. Is it something with our ISP, or with the hosting company that hosts our servers? I don't know what to search for or what to check. It is probably not a problem with IIS as nothing responded on IP B, not even remote desktop or MailEnable mail server.
I forgot to mention that a similar thing happened yesterday, but everything went back to normal after restarting the server.

I used to have the similar problem like you when I was working at my workplace. You should turn off your server (IP. B). After turn it off, try to ping to its IP address. If it is reply it mean that some computer has changed its IP address that duplicate with the server. If it is not reply it might came from the other problem. Try to do it, if it is a conflict IP turn off the server and use ping command with -a (ex: ping -a ...) to show the host name of an IP address and try to locate it on your next work.
On the other hand if your computer still have a problem and display any message box, record it and search in google or post it in here.
The above description just a small peice of experience that I faced with my old workplace. The problem might occure by difference issue.

Just a few ideas here...
When you can't reach the site at B, what message do you receive? Server not Found, or Page not Found? In the TCP/IP settings for the NIC is the box "Register this connection's addresses with DNS" selected? You might want to add entries to your HOSTS file for each site as a test, then have your testers try again. Also, have them try reaching the site using a URL containing the IP address instead of the normal URL: http://207.166.95.74/MySite/default.htm instead of http://www.mydomain.com/MySite/default.htm.
On Windows 2003 using Active Directory is not optional, IIRC, as it is in Win2K. Check to see that all of your sites are properly registered there, as well. I haven't a clue how to do so, since I've never played with it, but give it a look.

Hi all,
I'm hopping that someone can help me with this:
I've been trying for about 2h to delete a *@#!$%# directory on a XP Pro machine and all I get is "There was an error accessing the device". I was able to delete all its contents but can't delete it, rename it, change its attributes or anything.
I've already did a boot-time chkdsk who found no problems with the disk and am running out of options.
Does anyone know how to solve this and get rid of this directory?
TIA

Try to run your computer safe mode and delete the direcotry whether from DOS or from windows explorer. It it imposibile, try to scan your hard disk for bad sector. I also have the problem with my external hard disk too. Some folder it could not delete because it locate on the bad sector.

Thanks for your reply. It worked after my 4th or 5th startup chkdsk. (I haven't the faintest idea why the first ones didn't do any good).

(please excuse the long post - hopefully the details are helpful)
Platform: XP Professional
Summary: I am looking for a way to automatically log time spent in various applications. My intuition directs me to identify various trappable Windows’ events and API hooks to get this information. I am open to any and all advice. See business problem below if you want more details on the problem to be solved.
I will be happy to use a preexisting application or if necessary I can create my own. I have my own application tools and can create the necessary database and code with proper APIs to populate it, however I need to trap the Windows Events (or have those events call the APIs). Off the top of my head, I imagine I will need to trap the following for the various applications I use in the course of a day (my code would add a date/time stamp):
1) Windows start time
2) Application start and end. (Application name and startup parameters)
3) Application switches (Application name for switch from app and switch to app) – switch could be either by mouse or <alt>-<tab>.
4) Idle time begin (could be same as screen saver activation) – need app with focus when “idle timed out”
5) Idle time end (need app with focus)
6) Many others I probably forgot
7) Windows log off time
Do any such events exist that are trappable? Will the Windows SDK help (is there only one or do multiple flavors exist)?
Alternatively, I imagine I could use spyware or a key logger (to spy on myself), but would like not to for a few reasons. First, distilling all that information will likely be as much work (or more) than my current manual effort to record the information. Second, I do not want passwords, credit card numbers, etc sitting around in log files.
Business Problem: I am in the software services business (4GL development in the manufacturing sector) and have always tried to keep detailed documentation of the work performed including analysis, communication, development, project managment, etc. This effort has served two very good purposes. First it aids my memory significantly when problems reoccur or people say “remember …?” – my memory is not nearly as good as I would like it to be. Second, it is the foundation for documenting work performed when invoices are submitted. This latter point has been invaluable as well – people see what they are paying for which leads to far less questions and less “sticker shock” especially when they made a multitude of additional requests.
Thank you.

What's the filename extension? What program(s) create/read them? Try using Google to search for file formats using the same extension. There are several sites on the Internet that publish the internal structure of various file formats; you might just get lucky!
