No, after the child is executed and start running the parent is closed. But the child must to know when exactly the parent is closed. This is need because i must to change the .exe file. So i thought that i can try to open the .exe file and if this fails it is still running. But this is very unsecure. So i want either to check if the parent process is running or check somehow is the parent's hInstance valid.

If the child program knew the handle of the parent program, it could call GetModuleFileName() . If it knew the process identifier, it could call OpenProcess() .

I can think of several ways. One way would be to use a named Mutex in the child which the parent can signal when it closes. Another would be to use a Memory Mapped File that the parent could write something to when it closed. There may also be someway for the child to find out or be passed the process handle for its parent and it could check on that.

Parent can create mutex and acquire it.
Child can open mutex and wait for mutex abandonment (WAIT_ABANDONED) and know that parent is gone.
A mutex will be released with WAIT_ABANDONED if the process owning it is terminated or exits.

I actually wanted to an application just like narrator for vision impairment computer users.
For this I need to get the text of windows items, when we move mouse over to any button, menu items etc.
I'll then put that text to "text ti voice engine" to convert that text into voice.
For this how can I get access to the item text whether it is a tooltip text or windows text.
Thnx for replying

I want to merge cell of the word by VC and my codes as follow:
for(int i=3,j=0;j<hostcount;++j,++i)
{
c1.releasedispatch();

c2=pTable->Cell(i+DayCount,1);
c1.Merge(c2);

My Question is How to display the left side of the Explorer Window i.e., The Folders part in the Splitter window? The splitter window is being derived from CTreeView.

OK, in other words, you want to know how to populate the TreeControl in your TreeView derived splitter. Thats not easy to describe in one sentence. I don't know about your skills in VC, but this example from P.J. Naughter is should be easily adaptable for your needs:

Hi,
I've been given a project which receive images from a webcam on the white plane and count the number of black balls on the white plane and find the position of the balls on the plane.First it receives images from web cam and transform them into a 8 bit greyscale mode and apply several image processing filters on the image.How can I do it and which webcam should I use?
Note:I must use Visual C++ 6.0

I'm not sure whether this is a COM or simply a C++ library query.
Basicaly, i've got a program that needs to read the current appearance data of windows. But i can't find where to find the information from ANYWHERE.
I need the following values:
(For NT)
* Title Bar Size
* Title Bar Colour
* Title Bar Text Size
* Title Bar Text Colour
* Window Border Size
* Window Border Colour
For both Active and Inactive windows.
I don't really need details on how to do both, just what to do to get them for NT.
(For XP)
* The shape of windows, i.e. whether windows have the rounded corner, and if so, how I can get the graphics map for them. I can set this manualy, but it isn't dynamicaly changing depending on user settings.
* Besides that, I really need similar information as above,
Text Size, Text Colour and Title Bar Size.
XP doesn't seem to have resizable windows borders, so I don't think I need that.
Any pointers into what DLL + Method I should be using would be a great help, as I've trawled through MSDN looking for windows appearance and display API libraries and found squat.
Cheers
Cata
[Edit: I think I found what I'm looking for in GetSystemMetrics + GetSystemColor. If anyone can tell me if this works for both NT and XP, it would be really helpful.
I still haven't solved the graphics path for cropped window shapes, so if anyone know what to do about that, I would be greatful.]

There might be an easier way I don't know about, but check out ::GetWindowRgn() for window shapes.

Windows shape seems to be theme related, so i'm going to invenstigage the windows theme DLL. If it's disabled, then the windows will be square by default, but some custom theme styles use square as well.
Additionaly, I've got a problem with finding out information on the font and colour of text for windows caption bars.
Do you know where I could find out about this?
Cheers

Yes. ::GetWindowRgn() takes that into account.

::GetSysColor(COLOR_CAPTIONTEXT) and ::GetSysColor(COLOR_INACTIVECAPTIONTEXT) might do the trick for the color part.
Check ::GetStockObject() for the font part. I really don't know if it's covered here, but it might be worth the check anyway.
