using TweakUI you can hide the specific icons in the Control Panel. But you want to hide the services itself from the SCM display?
Then the management of services will be a difficult task to even the System Administrator right?

Hello all,
my question is simple: if I open a file with CreateFile and
FILE_FLAG_WRITE_THROUGH and I write some data into it with WriteFile, do I
have to call FlushFileBuffers to make sure the data is written in the file?
I've noticed that FlushFileBuffers takes an enormous amount of time to
complete and I was wondering why. I'd like to avoid this and I was hoping
FILE_FLAG_WRITE_THROUGH could save me here.
Best regards,

Hello,
I am looking for ways to script/program the following on WinXP:
1. Install a loopback adapter.
2. Configure the IP address on it
3. Rename the connection name that appears in Network Connections
4. Unbind the Windows Filesharing Service from it.
Some research revealed the following options:
1. Install loopback adapter.
- Use devcon.exe available from MS.
2. Configure IP address.
- Use WSH
- I can also edit the registry directly
3. Rename the connection.
- Find the GUID of newly installed adapter, and set HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlNetwork{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}{$GUID}Name
4. Unbind FileSharing
I ran regmon while doing this manually, and noticed that it removes the adapter GUID from the following registry keys:
HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesLanManServer*
However, it also changes a binary key HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlNetworkConfig
Simply doing the first part does not result in an unchecked box in the adapter properties screen for File Sharing, so I assume the second step is also needed. However, I don't know how to generate the binary data.
----------------------
I am ok with using devcon.exe and WSH for the first two steps, and editing the registry for the third step is kinda dirty, but acceptable. It would be nice to find a cleaner method, as well as a solution for #4.
Thanks for your help!

I'm using a 'WakeUp On LAN' Program, that sends 'Magic Packets' to a MAC-Address of a specified
PC - that works, when the Attribute for the Netbios-Card is set.
The 'Wake On LAN-Attribute' of the Netbios-Card must be set to 'Yes' or some else.
How can I solve this by using a C-Program? Is there anyone who knows a solution?

I recently changed all the usernames and passwords on all my computers/accounts including file shares. I now have a problem where I do not have permission to access shares that I "have permission" to access. I have seen this before in 2003 Server I just had to clear the stored usernames and passwords. Does anyone know where this is in XP Pro? I can't find. Some help would be greatly appreciated.

What do you mean by clear user name and password? Do you set the password or delete the SAM file? Your SAM store at two place:
1. C:\WINDOWS\repair\SAM<br />
2. C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SAM
You have to delete these two file then restart your computer and log as Administrator with blank password but you have to create all user account again. But remember if you want to delete this file you must move your hard drive and connect it to another system then you hard drive would become D: drive. So your file would become:
1. D:\WINDOWS\repair\SAM<br />
2. D:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SAM
Hope that work!!!

I want to create a string value DisableLockWorkStation under the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System. The user is not allowed to do it. (I want to do it for NT4, Win2k, and XP).
The manual way is to login as the administrator, run regedt32, and load the registry hive ntuser.dat file of the user from Documnents and Settings under HKEY_USERS. Afterwards create the new value and unload the hive.
But then the administrator should repeat it for every user. How can the administrator do a change that affects every user? I tried creating the value in the relevant key in [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT]. It didn't affect either the user or the administrator.
Actually I want to do this during the installation of my program. So the solution has to be convertible to C++ for me.
Thank you...

The way to edit this is to use Group Policy. See this page[^] for details (Google's cache of a page on microsoft.com).
I'd recommend asking the administrator to do this. If you're in an Active Directory network environment the administrator can do this by creating a Group Policy object with the setting; place all the computers you want the setting to affect in the same Organizational Unit in AD, and link the GPO to that container. If you want a global policy for your organisation, create the GPO in the domain root.
If you must do it on a local system through code, you can use the IGroupPolicyObject interface to edit the local GPO.

As far as I know windows xp require DOS higher than 7.0. Did you create the start up disk of windows xp? Try to read this article[^] for more information.

Hi !!
In my batch, I need to launch an application, wait for it to be finished and then keep going with my batch.
But unfortunately, as soon as my app is launched, the batch keeps going without waiting for the app !
When I try to launch manually from the Dos window the app, I can see that I get the prompt as soon as the app is launched. On the other hand, when I launch other apps, I don't get any prompt before the app is finished !
Why do I get those different behaviours ? How can I make sure the prompt will wait for the app to be finished ?
thanks for your help !

Are you using the Call <app> command in your batch?

I tried with and without the 'Call' command, but it didn't change anything.....

I think there are two case:
1. You want to control the application that is running by yourself you could use the PAUSE command[^] to terminate your batch process. After you close the application then you can press any key to continue.
2. If you want to run it automatically without user respond, you should create your batch file in a seperate file then schedule it to run by an estimate period. For schedule the batch file to run in a specific time check AT command[^] for more information.

LINUX-FEDORA -- environment variables..
QUESTION 1. This may sound like a dump question (okay,it is a dump question):
CATALINA_HOME=/usr/local/tomcat-4.1.30
APACHE_HOME=/usr/local/apache2
ANT_HOME=/usr/local/ant
JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_05
J2EE_HOME=/usr/java/j2sdkee1.3.1
PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin:$J2EE_HOME/bin
CLASSPATH=.:$J2EE_HOME/lib/j2ee.jar:$J2EE_HOME/lib/locale
export CATALINE_HOME
export APACHE_HOME
export ANT_HOME
export JAVA_HOME
export J2EE_HOME
export CLASS_PATH
What does command "export" do? I found this:http://www.er.uqam.ca/nobel/r10735/unixcomm.html
export - place the value of a variable in the calling environment (makes it global). This is a shell builtin.
But don't quite get what it means...
QUESTION 2: I placed the above script in file /etc/profile so environment variables get loaded everytime you go into console mode by "CTRL-ATL-F1" -- BUT, is this equivalent to "System" environment variables in Windows? I notice that this script wasn't executed if console is launched from "menu>System Tools>Terminal" (launched from desktop menu)... how can I get around this?
THanks!

Export makes the variable available to programs started from your current shell. Without "export" the variable value is usable only in the shell script where it's defined.
Q2: Looks like the shell launched from System Tools->Terminal isn't a login shell, so it doesn't read /etc/profile. A workaround for this is to place the commands in a separate script in the /etc/profile.d directory so it gets sourced by /etc/bashrc. You should do this anyway for your own customizations instead of modifying the system /etc/profile script. Give the script a ".sh" suffix and make it executable.
BTW. you should subscribe to the Fedora mailing list, or use the forums at FedoraForum.org.

Thanks, yes, it's "bashrc" launched from "System Tools>Terminal" that's having problem. I've followed your instruction and placed a startup script (profile.sh) under "etc/profile.d" directory - it worked and it gets executed everytime bash is launched.
btw,
1. Why is it called "bashrc" and not "bash"? does "rc" stands for something? "root console" perhaps?
2. If any application is launched from Console (login shell or bashrc), then obviously the environment variables in my startup scripts (etc/profile.d/profile.sh) would be in effect. But what if the application is launched from side menu bar? profile.sh only runs when you launch "bashrc".
