My work doesn't have any policy about the dress code thus everyone wears t-shirts and jeans etcetc some guys wears baseball caps in the office. personally i have a funny rule of mine not to put on a cap indoor, so i don't like that..
The problem is that there're some "serious" guys in my building like Bentz and some financial companies.. they might have complained to the owner of the buidling once they sent us an official complaint that our employees not to drag slippers on the lobby of the building. That sucks

In Trivandrum, some of the companies have strict dress codes, where you have to wear ties and long sleeved shirts tucked in etc. It doesn't make sense in the hot Trivandrum weather (usually above 27 degrees C). The office premises are air conditioned, but whenever people get out of the office for food or something else, it is ridiculous to have to go around dressed like that. I talked to some of the employees and they said they had got used to it and that this is supposed to impress clients!!! I bet this dress code policy must have made a few people turn away - and possibly smart confident people. I am also sure clients would be more amused than impressed by this unsuitable dress code policy.

Until this summer we were allowed to come to the office whichever way we liked [including shorts]. Now the policy is "Long trousers and no Tank Shirts (i don't care bout the tank shirts)".
For me this means that i have to change clothes 4x. [First time, when i come to the office; Second time going out for lunch; Third time coming back; Fourth time, in the evening]
I know that this is normal for nearly everyone.. but if you were used to wear whatever you like, you hate it.

We have local company that requires suit and tie even to the point that if you leave your desk you must wear a jacket. I have turned down offers from this company and I know of others that have told them where they can put the suit and tie also.

That sounds like the dress code over at PayChex... from what I hear, the dress code WAS, suit and tie, all women had to wear dresses or skirts. The men could not have any facial hair and men could not have hair longer than their collar. This would be for EVERYONE even if you were not meeting with clients. Even the IT people had to wear jacket and tie (I think they could take the jacket off while they were under a desk - but had to put it on soon afterwards). I have also heard unconfirmed rumors that the dock workers had to at least wear a dress shirt and tie too.
But they have loosened up abit. The men can now also wear sweaters and a dress shirt.

Wow, I would certainly not work at any place that was so strict. What's the point of working there if you're uncomfortable all day long?

And, how less effective will you be if you are uncomfortable? Concentration requires utmost comfort. The lack of comfort will certainly damage work ethic.

Are all these places software development shops? Wow.. I guess I have it good. We can pretty much wear anything and sometimes some of the other people at work put on their wet suites and hit the beach as we are beach side.
Oh course if customers come in our dress code is upgraded to polo shirts..

I just left a job that required a shirt and tie, no jacket though. That was one of the reasons I left. Now I'm back in Austin working at a software company instead of an I/T department and I'm much happier.

I prefer no dress code. But I guess the whole point of dress code is to prevent "dumb casuals", not "smart casuals" (I'm sure you've seen it before) - not everything casual translate to "smart casuals" afterall
... then again, just because it's "formal" doesn't mean it's "smart formal"... just how can you make sure your employee looks at least decent in the eyes of the ...

"Casual" == t-shirt and shorts and optionally shoes.
"Business casual" == button-down shirt, no tie, slacks or kakhis, dress shoes (basically, business attire minus the jacket and tie)
"Smart casual" == no idea, never heard it before.
Me == button-down shirt (unbuttoned, untucked) and a t-shirt, shorts, tennis shoes (which I usually take off once I'm at my desk *wiggles toes*). Luckily I'm in California so I can wear that type of clothing every day.  I never ever wear long pants, I hate them. I'll only wear a long-sleeved shirt if it's cold or if I don't have any clean short-sleeved shirts.
