How to make a visual basic 2008 trial application with mysql

Hello I really need help I'm still somewhat new to visual basic but my question is I'm working on my first application and i would like to make it a 10 times trial use application so if the application is open 11 times it will prompt a user to put in a serial key. but in order to do that it will need to check a mysql database to see if the the license is there and if it is in use or not. If in use it will tell the user the license is in use if not in use it will let the user use that license key. i been searching all over and so far no luck. Can someone please help me.
