Jeez. They could have at least given them Reese's Cups (the four pack, of course).

...I'd suggest that as the Mars factory was about half a mile away it was just possible that someone in management had a friend or family member working there who got freebies...

It's not that I'm ONLY in it for the money, but it's the way of showing appreciation that hurts the most, and so it's the one that means the most as well.

No offense, but I don't really want to encourage the creation of another VB developer.

as easily, but it's certainly doable. - Jamie Nordmeyer - 15-Nov-2002

OK, OK, we need to pay the bills, but surely this isn't the goal that everyone strives for.

I took "inspires" in this context to mean "What makes me most want to continue doing this?".
I swithered a bit between cash and seeing people use the product, and came down on cash because that's the most sincere appreciation a business can offer. For a business to pay me money, particularly if it's money not in my basic contract, I must have done something right, and it's been recognised by other people.
I get personal satisfaction out of seeing the product used, but the question was "What reward do you most appreciate?". Having the product used doesn't necesarily equate to any appreciation of my work, so business putting its hand in its pocket is the winner.
