I'm an amateur nutritionist and professional health nut. Since I'm a developer I make it a point to add brain related nutrition to my diet.
The cliche thing to say is to eat fish, but not any fish, but ocean salmon, as it's the Omega-3s you need (which are the highest in ocean Salmon). I honestly haven't eaten salmon (which I love) for 8 months as there are other sources of Omega-3. Always remember plant based vitanutrients are highly quality than animal based.
Ex: if you need proteins then soy, beans & grains are superior to meat. There's a reason why body builder shakes/powders use wheat & soy, and not meat based.
But back to my point take the following, in order of effect, to increase brain function:
Omega 3s via Salmon Oil and Flaxseed Oil
Amino Acids (this is what proteins break down into)
B Complex
Multivitamin
I may be a health nut, but I party alot, and I need all the amunition to get back the brain cells I killed on the weekend

I know quite a few overweight programmers. The fact that we spend most of our time sitting in front of a computer sure doesn't help. What do you do to keep from putting on the extra pounds?
One thing I almost never do is eat at my desk. I make myself get up and get something to eat instead of bringing it to my computer. Since coding is so brain consuming, it is easy to overeat while coding. If I deny myself the luxury of eating by my computer, then I'm more likely to code without interruption.
What do you do to keep from bloating up?

Try to build more exercise into my daily routine. We have several buildings where I work, and if I have a meeting in another one, I almost always walk instead of drive. I sometimes bike to work. I also tend to walk to other's offices instead of e-mailing them or calling them.
I also try a psychological ploy - I try to avoid the vending machines, but to do that I carry little or no change or small bills. The machines take $1 but not $5 or higher, and there is no change machine, so I try to keep just $5's.

I got to the Gym two days a week, one hour per day. And I mostly mantain a mediterranean diet with lots of vegetebls and grilled meat or fish.
But i'm still FAT according to my doc... 15 Kg overweighted they say...
Many developers here at work are gym maniacs or are handling with their anorexia, wich doesn't fit the stereotype for developers, but others are healthly fat mammals like me.

Here's my routine.....
Run for 20 minutes on Tue/Thu/Sat
Lift weights for 45 minutes on Mon/Wed/Fri
I do this in the garage, I don't need a fancy gym.
As far as eating... I follow the Eating for Life plan. http://eatingforlife.com. Which is not a "diet", but just a simple, common sense way to eat. Basically, watch your portion size and eat a good balance of healthy foods. No gimicks, no pills and shakes and crap, no BS.

I probably smoke 1 pack of cigarettes a week, 3 cans of Coke a day, and McDonalds for breakfast and lunch. And probably 3 coffees a day too. For what I do, they call me "Consumer" and for some odd reason, I'm quite fit.
What I forgot to mention so far is my obligation to family feasting every weekend... which seems to be some sort of cultural tradition. But oh on, I don't intend to age and morphy into typical males with love-handles and a boring life.

You must be quite young. Age has a way of catching up with you. I eat about a third of what I used to when I was 25 (I'm over 40 now).

You can also look fit without actually being fit. Now, if you're out climbing mountains and stuff, then sure I'd say you are fit. But quite the opposite if you just happen to *look* fit, but huff and puff after climbing a fight of stairs...

No, you will morph into a male pulling around an oxygen tank whilst a cigarette dangles from your hand...also add in heart disease and maybe cancer...

I occasionaly try to eat right. But, eating is a distraction. I used to work with an engineer, who would verbaly force me to stop working and go to lunch (I miss him!).
In general I eat because I have too, not because I want too!
If you ever want to lose weight, just follow me around, eat what I eat, drink what I drink.

Is that after you have finished with it? I don't think anyone would take you up on that offer!

I am standing alone on the highest point on the food chain looking down at all the possible food, I will be hungry in 5 minutes.

I'm not an ultra-healthy eater as in being a vegan/eating only raw foods, but I tend to eat healthier than the average person. I eat whole grains and lots of fruits and veges :yum:. I also eat dairy, eggs, poultry, and fish, and I don't mind eating some types of "junk food" once in a while.
I used to eat a lot of refined products (white flour and rice, etc) and refined sugar. Then I decided to try whole grains and raw sugar, and I was hooked! They have so much more flavor than the refined versions that the refined versions taste like cardboard in comparison. I don't see how refined foods are an improvement in flavor.
I don't like to see people making eating healthy an obsession, nor do I like to see people destroying their bodies through junk food. I don't spend a lot of time carefully making sure everything I eat is just so, but I do try to make healthy choices.
