Hello there
I am building a deployment package. I have two types of setup one is for application and other for Database. for database I have an Exe which should run during admin setup. the problem is when I run the setup after compiiling it only runs client setup.
how to run admin setup as in dot net when you add the setup builder project it shows you two different types of deployment but runs only one.
what I need is .... user select either he is going for database setup or application setup during main setup.
any support ???

Admin setup in Windows Installer refers to putting components on a central server so that clients can install them as options, not to performing a different sort of setup like the situation you refer to, i.e DB vs client app install.
Although you can manually modify an MSI to support Features, doing so is a non-trivial process and requires considerable knowledge of MSI architecture.
The simplest way to accomplish what you need is to package your DB setup separately from the client application, and then modify the bootstrapper application to allow the user to select which install they wish to run.

How we can used sql command such as :
select max(debit), max (credit) from entries group by accountno
Im using sqldataadapter as bridge to database. When retrieve this statement from query builder (sqldataadapter1.fill) sure cant be placed into the dataset later because they are not same table design or schema.
How i can make used of that max(debit) or max(credit) value which have been grouped by accountno.
I have idea to select all data and put it into dataset and from dataset i put:
Dim dataTab As DataTable = DataSet11.Tables("Entries")
Dim deb As Double= dataTab.Compute("sum(debit)", "")
but the compute sum is not grouped summary, how can i solve all above problem and , "") sign is actually to filter, how to make use of that?
Thanks in advance.

Use a numeric index to access your columns, or do this:
LordLothar wrote:
select max(debit) as maxDebit, max (credit) as maxCredit from entries group by accountno
Then you can access them by name.

Hi
I would just like to know how to print a simple text file from VBA. In VB6 I use this method:
Open FileName For Input As x
Do While Not EOF(x)
Line Input #x, s
Printer.Print s
Loop
Printer.EndDoc
But in VBA this is not possible. Any suggestion on how to print from VBA?

First of all VB6 apps has really an advantage over .Net apps because the overhead of loading the framework is not there. Then normally when a .Net app starts up the jit has much to do which slows down the startup time. At least the second can be reduced. Search for NGen on google. Its a tool coming with the SDK which lets you precompile assemblies which can reduce start up time greatly (depending on what exactly happens on your start up).

so what ? how and where do you write your code ? with notepad ?
if you write with visual studio, so you certainly write into vb files into a project registered into the solution...
what is your problem actually ?

Hi all, I am a new vb.net programmer wanna be and I gotten most of the basics on vb.net. But I am having a hard time trying to grasp database programming.. when I mean database programming, i mean trying to make my vb.net access a MS access file (*.mdb) and do editing and updating and displaying the data on a text box and all..
Wondering whether anyone out there with this knowledge can help me out, or better yet, have some kind of ebook that can go step by step with nice little DIY samples on this subject.
Thanz for your time..

One of the first things to pick up on is the connection string. A good reference is www.connnectionstrings.com to get you started.
A decent reference for selecting, inserting, updating and deleting records in a database is msdn.microsoft.com.
You can also stop by a book store and pick up a book on database's. I have codeing websites and windows forms to database's for 5yrs and still need to reference something, but that just might be my memory.....
ps - I also found www.asp101.net a good starting point.

Will do, thanz for the suggestion... As to go to a book store and get a good book, I wish I could. Where I lived in, have the world's crappiest book collection in the whole world, not to mentioned outdated. Only way is either go to West Malaysia or Singapore and visit their amazingly huge book stores there but air plane tickets ain't exactly cheap.. haha..
Anyway, thanz for your help... Ur the man...!!

What do you mean by "in LAN area"?
If your asking if a VB program can access network resources, then yes, it can. But that all depends on what your talking about.

In my opinion, if it is possible, try to buy this book[^]. I think it could help you to work in LAN from your VB.NET application.
