hiho
i read a book about linux networking and it describes some techniques for a server
but my question is more about software architecture than linux programming
so i post it here
1. multiplexing (select())
2. multiprocess (fork())
3. multithreaded (pthread's)
i understand the architecture of a process pool in which every process holds a thread pool where every thread calls accept on a socket to get the connection
the kernel then makes the decision which thread gets the connection
and that's why i don't understand multiplexing
because i think multiplexing does exactly the same
you use select to wait for a connection (or a descriptor to change its state) and then make accept
but if this can the kernel do for you
what is a multiprocessed, multithreaded multiplexing server good for?
or what exactly is a multiplexing server compared with a multiprocesses/multithreaded server?

Hi, I have the situation where a user is able to select a voucher type. On clicking add, instead of posting back to the server, I just want to append the details to an Orders table. The table would probably contain cellphone number and voucher type (so 2 columns, and possibly a hidden index column if possible).
I actually dont know where to start on this, so if you know any good tutorials, please send them to me. Thanks

What is the code to pass data from one page to the other??? Like for example, this form page allow users to enter their particulars, once they press button "confrim", another page displays all the data they have entered.Im new to javascript.
|
|
|
|
|
You can't handle form data with javascript, so you have to send the form using method="get". The you can retrieve the data using this function:
Javascript: querystring[^]
---
b { font-weight: normal; }
|
|
|
|
|
i not quite understand what u mean. But do u have any simpler examples? There are some parts of the code i dont understand
|
|
|
|
|
Ok, here is a simple example:
page1.html:
<html><br />
<head><br />
<title>page 1</title><br />
</head><br />
<body><br />
<form method="get" action="page2.html"><br />
name:<input type="text" name="name"><br />
info:<input type="text" name="info"><br />
<input type="submit"><br />
</form><br />
</body><br />
</html>
page2.html:
<html><br />
<head><br />
<title>page 2</title><br />
</head><br />
<body><br />
Form data:<br><br />
<script type="text/javascript"><br />
document.write(document.location.search);<br />
</script><br />
</body><br />
</html>
---
b { font-weight: normal; }
|
|
|
|
|
OMG!!! Thanks a lot. Ur a great help. But is there any way to align the displyed information neatly??? Btw, what does the document.write(document.location.search) means????
|
|
|
|
|
Why do you use so many question marks????????????????????????????????
To extract the values from the form data, you use the function I linked to before.
document.location.search contains the part of the url that contains the query string, e.g. the data sent from the form.
document.write() is used to write text to the web page source.
---
b { font-weight: normal; }
|
|
|
|
|
So how to align the values neatly in a vertical order?Like this:
Name: *****
Info: *****
|
|
|
|
|
Use html to do the formatting.

b { font-weight: normal; }

Hi,
On our site we send out purchase confirmation emails and we want to be able to send them out with the correct time for the user in the purchase date and time information. At the moment I simply use DateTime.Now() (in c#) but of course that gives the SERVER time which means nothing to anyone not in the same locale... so is it possible to get the local time from the user's HTTP request? If so, how would one go about it using either ASP.Net or Javascript?
TIA for any help...
Mike.

Hi Mike,
You might want to check out the javascript method getTimezoneOffset[^] of the Date object which returns the timezone offset at the client side. You can pass this value to your server side code in a web page aspx, and also provide a snippet of code to convert the current time from the server timezone to the client timeone. I guess that you can quickly find out lots of sample code out there to do the converting.

Thanks - that's exactly what I needed!! I shouldn't have any problem using this with .Net as I'm quite used to passing stuff from JS through to the server side and using it there.
Cheers,
Mike

Is it possible to create any kind of script page that would serve as a tunneling application on a server? ASP/PHP or a .NET Webservice? Then use a windows application to perform the tunneling, etc...just like http-tunnel and hopster.

Hi all,
I've created server application with a listener socket (I'm using C#).
Everything is ok when the client sends data to the server,
but when the server tries to send data to the client I get the error:
"Cannor block a call on this socket, while an earlier async one is in progress"
The client\server have a listening thread.
How can I sends data to the clients?
Thanks

Hi all
I need some help in ASP to upload file of maximum size 10 MB.

Thanx

Try SoftArtisans FileUp... we use it on one of our sites and although it can be tricky to set up it works very well. We run a music site on which artists upload their own tracks and then organise them to sell on our retail web site - we limit each upload to 12MB which can be done in the web.config in ASP.Net - not sure how you'd do in classic ASP but I know Fileup does support that version as I used it on an old ASP site a few years ago.
HTH...

"An error occurred on the server when processing the URL. Please contact the system administrator".
Does anyone know the cause of this error?
This error occurs everytime I add or edit a record with attachment. No error encountered in my localhost. Error occurs in staging server.
Thanks!

I have just installed IIS on my old PC (running Windows 2000). This is to
test my Web Site before getting onto the real server.
I am using asp to handle the Contact page where users can e-mail me.
I have been using JMail in a Send_email.asp, but get the error:-
Error Type:
Server object, ASP 0177 (0x800401F3)
Invalid ProgID. For additional information specific to this message please
visit the Microsoft Online Support site located at:
http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.
/My_Site/send_email.asp, line 108
Now line 108 is shown below:-
Set objJMail = Server.CreateObject("JMail.SMTPMail")
Have I configured the IIS program corectly.
Note this PC is on my home network (shares internet via a gateway PC) and
the only e-mail I have on it is my hotmail.
i.e. what do I put in these fields:-
strMyEmailAddress = "myhotmail@hotmail.com"
strSMTPServerAddress = "smtp.hotmail.com"
Are the above correct?
I did run this VB program to test JMail and it ran OK.
On Error Resume Next
Set ob = CreateObject("JMail.SMTPMail")
If Not ob Is Nothing Then
MsgBox "object created OK"
Set ob = Nothing
Else
MsgBox "failed to create object"
End IF
Are they some settings in Personel Web Manager or somewhere else I need to
set?

The usual reason for this error message is that the component is not installed. Have you installed the mail component?
In your test program, how did you declare the ob variable? If you didn't declare it, it will be of the type variant. That would mean that in case of failure to create the object, the value in the variable would not be Nothing, but Empty.

Thanks Guffa, yes the JMail was not installed on the computer.
I thought that installing IIS was all you needed to do. I havr downloaded and installed/registered JMail.dll.
The script now runs a bit further.
It hits a problem with objMail.Execute statement.
Do I need to make some settings in the IIS or Personel Web Manager.
For this testing I am using my hotmail, as thats all I have on this test computer.
I use smtp.hotmail.co.uk
and myhotmail@hotmail.co.uk
Is this correct?
Many thanks,
Graham.

Most certainly hotmail won't let you use their smtp server to send mails, if they even have a mail server at that address.
If the server has an smtp server installed, you most likely don't need to specify the smtp address at all, or specify localhost as smtp server.
