Yes, such an ideal laptop would necessarily be a high-maintenance item. They do require a lot of upkeep. But I think that, in the long run, it would be money well spent.
At my age, I've given up the quest for the perfect laptop, and taken to the hobby of birdwatching. I'm currently seeking a red-headed, double-breasted mattress thrasher. Please let me know if you spot one, especially if it's unmated.

I've heard they inhabit this area, but I haven't seen any evidence. I promise, if I catch a picture in the wild, you'll be the first to know...

I have been given a task which requires my program to be able to monitor (in realtime) a person speaking. In particular, I need to know when he starts and stops talking.
The environment is that there is a dedicated microphone connected to a PC running WinXP and my "C" program (MSVC 6.0).
Being a software person, I do not have much experience working with speech and sound.
Any suggestions on how to do this?
All comments and suggestions will be appreciated.

I haven't done much of the same, though you might want to drop in on the audio section here at CP, or if you have a full weekend download an open source audio project and use the source to teach you how.
Try this project on fft for audio[^].
or visit several of the projects in the audio section[^] until you pick up the classes and knowledge you need.

I'm not sure much which way you want it.
I hope you want to monitor voice continuously.
if it is so , use the mcisendstring functions and API calls on windows to monitor the voice.
regds.

Dear Anonymous,
I don't understand what do you mean when you said which way you want it?
I understand that I will need to monitor the sound continuously, so that I can detect the starts and stops of the speaker.
Also, could you please expand on which mcisendstring functions and API calls I should examine because I need help and possibly don't know what questions to ask.
By the way, I have used the mci functions to play sound and record, but signal analysis is something new to me.

Lo all
like a lot of coder nerdies i'm pretty vacant when it comes to hardware.
Ive got a asus a7s8x-mx motherboard (running sempron 2800 CPU) which takes a 8x AGP card
the manual says its got to be a 1.5 Volt card and to only install a 1.5 volt card...
Can I get some suggestions for suitable 8x graphics cards which fit the 1.5 Volt requirements?

8x AGP cards are .8 volt. 4x AGP cards are 1.5 volt. 1x and 2x cards use 3.3 volt signaling. Recheck your specs, most 8x cards will run 4x as well but some motherboards that are 8x (.8v) will not run 4x mode.

k, heres the link to to the motherboard[^]
says "AGP 8X Technology
AGP8X (AGP 3.0) is the next generation VGA interface specification that enables enhanced graphics performance with high bandwidth speeds up to 2.12GB/s and twice as fast as AGP4X."
I looked at the sapphire 9600-xt and it seems nice...do you have a motherboard in mind you reckon would go well?

Bryce, I looked up the specs on the A7S8X-MS motherboard and most any 8x AGP card should work with it. The 9600 is a good price for performance card.

Too bad 2 9600 Pro were cooked in this board and 2 boards had their audio cooked twice by the cards. It really is an 8x AGP slot that requires a 1.5 volt card. The sticker over the AGP slot said so.

Beyond your compatibility requirement, what are your needs as far as graphics cards? There are a lot out there.

Hi!
Now I wanna sent 4 bytes data by calling DeviceIoControl() from my directshow application to my streaming minidriver.First,I call the CreateFile() to get a device handle, and the minidriver can receive a IRP_MJ_CREATE IRP,and the CreateFile() returns nonzero. But when the app runs to DeviceIoControl(),the minidriver does not recieve any SRB.The DeviveIoControl() returns zero, and GetlastError() returns 50,which says:"The request is not supposed."
I difined my own IOCTL command in my driver and app.
What causes the error 50 or if there is any other way to send data to steaming minidriver from directshow application?
Thanks for any help!

Does CreateFile return INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE?
Does your driver antry set a dispatch handler for DeviceIoControl?
Does you DeviceIoControl handler handle that IOCTL?
Is the buffer size correct for thst IOCTL?

About 3 months ago, I purchased a Netgear WGR614v6 Wireless G router; and have had nothing but problems. Depsite my continued posts on Netgear's site, and unanswered calls to their Tech Support, I thought I would post my woes here, in hopes someone might have a suggestion for me that I've yet to try (other than purchase a LinkSys router - which is what I should have done from the get go).
Here's the problem:
Anytime any computer connected to the router via wireless, attempts to copy a large number of files (to a Local share on the main PC to which the router is directly connected), the wireless on the router just dies. All the hard wired computers plugged directly into the router still have a connection, it's just the wireless that essentially "turns off". The only solution is to unplug the router and plug it back in, thereby "restarting" the router.
What I've tired (settings)
Originally I had the router set to Chanl. 11 with 64-bit WEP enabled. After a post to the Netgear fourms with this problem, their tech support suggested I switch to Chanl 1 and disable WEP.
Well, since I'm not about to run a wireless router without security, I changed to Chanl 1 and switched over to WPA encryption - still the same problem.
I can copy "smaller" files back-and-forth all day long, but if I attempt to copy a large number of files (e.g., 5+ gigs) - it will kill the wireless connection almost every single time.
Suggestions? (before I go out and purchase a LinkSys router)

That sounds like a physical problem with the router. I am trying to track down a similar problem with the same model v4 system. The router, however, never locks up -- I have been trying to establish if it is db strength or external influence or something internal. When transferring large files communication will be lost in the middle, unknown reason, but there is no need to reset the router, all physical functionality is maintained following the interrupt. I can start again easily within about 10 seconds without reset. However, it still kills the copy. I'll have to check here for answers in case they are related. Or we both toss our Netgear systems and go linksys.
If the unit is still under warrenty coverage I would hassle them about it, you paid for it, a locked up router should be their fault. Mine has never locked up, it runs unattented at the top of my bookshelf.
