Hi
Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to convert a large C# solution to perform case insensitive string comparisons throughout?
Ideally, i would have hoped that this would be a compiler option.

There's no compiler option that I can think of. You need to either create a string class ( can you even derive from 'string' ? ) or write your own comparison function, obviously in both cases, you need to change a lot of code by hand ( the string class would allow a global search and replace, at least ).

The string class contains a static method for doing case-insensitive matches. String.Compare( str1, str2, true );
How you'd apply that gloabally for your project, don't know. Maybe as been suggested, make your own class that replaces the ==.

Hi There,
I have developed an Add in / bolt on architecture in our existing VB6 app that allows .Net objects to be loaded/hosted and I have been able to debug the .Net code by loading the .Net project, setting a break point on the code that will be called by the VB6 app, then attaching to the VB6 apps process using VS.net.
I have also done the same using C# as both the host and the add in.
In both of the above cases it involves opening the add in project and attaching to the main project's/applications process using VS.Net.
PS: You also need the PDB file to tie the source to the Exe/dll.

Try adding the project for the plugin as a sub-project of your solution for the application that loads the plugin.

Hi all,
I have written a basic proxy in C# to log and control Interent access on a LAN. the problem is that this doesnt work if i dont have a gateway address in the LAN card IP details. what i would like to do is have the proxy intercept the request on port 80 (or other ports) then it forwards the request to the gateway.
cause if i leave the gateway address in the NIC details then users can just remove the proxy from browser config and they still got access to Internet.
can anyone give me the right direction to acheive this please ?

Can't you make your gateway inaccessible from the client computers? That way, they'd be forced to connect through your proxy.

Im creating a client server app. One server and multiple clients. Every client is sending serialized messages to the server. Every message has to arrive (No UDP).
What to use. Chould I use TCPclient and send one message and close connection to server or should I use something like TcpChannel (Not sure what it is, or if it can send serialized objects). The time between messages vary from miliseconds to hours.

The best solution would be to use a TCPClient wrapped inside some sort of 'TCPManager' class that implements a timeout service. When you have to send a message the TCPManager class opens the connection and keeps it open for, say, 5 seconds before closind it again if there are no new messages to send.

using visual studio 2005 I am trying to build a webservice on a virtual server to access the COM object of virtual server 2005.
When I do it in a windows form, I have to disable the hosting process for getting the right HRESULT back, but how is this done in a webservice?
Is there something similar to disable the hosting process in a webservice?

The above is what MSDN tells me to do when getting the error in a Windows App, and this works.

Hi, I have a crystal report that i'm trying to connect to a Access database, which is password protected. Without the password everything works, but when the database is password protected i can't add the database to the report, The error is:
"Logon failed.
Source: Microsoft Jet Databse Engine.
Description:The application couldn't start. The Informationsdata for the group are missing or are exclusiv opened by an other user".
Does anyone knows what I'm doing wrong?

im trying to write a simple app that will find the handle to a textbox of my choice so i can have it type in text for me (ie, im trying to make a app to enter a password at a login screen on my game). any ideas on how i can do this? im lost here on where to begin. Is it possible to find the textbox at a certain mouse cord?
Its been a while since i have done any programming, but its slowly coming back to me.

Have you looked at Spy++? It does what you want and more.
I don't know if there are any managed APIs to do what you want. You might have to P/Invoke WindowFromPoint[^] instead.

Let say i have browser in my window form. This program will initially direct user to a website...
it will dial the ISP number and send the username and password automaticaly if the connection to ISP
doesn't exist...
Let say my modem is using COM1...how am i able to establish this connection...

Use MeasureString on the graphics object to find out where the first string ended, so you know where to draw the second one.

Hi everybuddy,
We are developing a project in which a set of various assemblies should be loaded into memory and run.
We have two strategies to do that:
1. Starting each assembly code in separate thread
2. Starting each assembly code in separate process
The problem is that I can't find a good reason for one of these ways, while my knowledge about important differences between 'Process' & 'Thread' is not complete.
In the topic I am looking to find these answers:
1. In the case of threads, can some error in code running in one thread cause problems for execution of other assembly codes in other threads, and even prevent them from running? if yes what type of errors may cause this situation?
2. what would happen if operating system, managed all applications in set of threads instead of set of processes?

Basically, there exists a relation one-to-many between processes and threads. That is, a process can host one or more threads but the inverse is not true.
All the threads inside a process share the same memory space, while each different process has its own heap.
Threads are in general a lighter solution that processes when you need concurrency, but not isolation of the memory space.
As for your questions:
1: If one thread throws an unhandled exception your entire application should stop. In the case or processes, in one 'crashes' the others keep running. If you implement a good exception handling mechanism, using threads should not be a problem anyway.
2: Using threads inside an operating system means having all the system memory in common to all the application running inside the system. This means that every piece of code can read and write memory of other applications. In other words, applications would not be isolated, the failure on one program can lead, through memory violations, to the failure of the entire system. Also, there would be no way of preventing malicious code to write on memory areas owned by other threads.
