I'm having some difficulty with setting up a small testing lab network. It was setup and working fine but the server hard drive had to be replaced so I did a fresh install and now...
Configuration:
Windows 2003 Standard Server(Domain Controller, AD, DHCP, DNS)
5 Windows XP Pro Workstations
1 Linksys Router
Symptoms:
All workstations can ping the server but not each other
Server can't ping any workstation
Names are resolved but gets request timeout message when trying to ping
Exception:
One workstation can be pinged and accessed by all even though it does not have a DNS record.
I took all the defaults during setup and nothing has changed on the router or workstations. There has to be something simple I missed but I can't see where the problem is. I've compared the working workstation with the others and can't see any difference. Again, the only thing that changed was putting in a new hard drive and fresh install on the server.
Anyone have a suggestion?

Sounds initially like either a firewall or permissions issue to me. Can you ping the individual workstations from the server? If yes, you need to check the account permissions. Are the workstations logging ON to the domain, or only locally and using the DHCP service from the server?

I'm struggling with how to set an environment variable for a DOS Window such that the variable contains embedded control characters such as carriage return and linefeed. But I can't seem to find the right way to escape it.
set BODY="Line1\nLine2"
The above always gives me the text 'Line1\nLine2' and what I really want is
Line1
Line2
Googling just seems to give me how to remove carriage returns from DOS files.

tracert HOST usually works for me.

For curiosity, at what registry key do the printer drivers save their information to?
Assuming SetPrinterData or GetPrinterData from whatt physical registry location do these extract info from?

I have the following setup, for which I'm not sure what software/configuration I should use. I have a normal DSL router for connecting to the internet, to which a switch is connected with a number of PC's on it. One of these PC's is running Win2k3 Server, it also has 2 network cards, one connecting to the aforementioned switch and another connecting directly to a single other computer. A sort of daisy-chain if you will. My question is, without using Windows' built-in network bridge, how can I give the computer connected directly to the server access to the rest of the network and the Internet?
I've tried Kerio WinRoute, but don't know enough about routing tables etc to make it work properly...

Hi, in windows xp pro, if i want to require the user to press the CTRL+ALT+DEL key i have to change the option in group policies. How could i require the user to press CTRL+ALT+DEL key in windows xp home edition?

I don't have an XP system handy, so I can't check it myself, but look for a similar option in local security policies.

Thank you very much for your information. For the second hyperlink could be apply only to windows xp professional edition only. For the first hyperlink, i have done as an instruction but it not work. I try to type the following command control userpassword2 and press enter but there is no dialog box appear.

I am using a friend's computer (MS XP Home) and am trying to do some remote unix programming through it.
The following is in regards to the left shift key only. The right shift key works fine. However I dont use the right shift key so that is of little use to me.
The long and short of it is the 'Shift+\' should result in '|' which is necessary for creating "or" statements in php and C++. When I hit "Shift+\" I get the pipe symbol "|" plus a carriage return. How do I reset the keyboard programming so that shift+\ yields a pipe "|."
I do not have sticky keys, filter keys or toggle keys turned on.

This would be dependant on the terminal app your using, not any keyboard mapping in Windows.

I have used notpad, wordpad, putty, and SSH terminal login. They all give the same result.
Additionally, the left shift key + \ will close a dialog window (much like esc or the SC_CLOSE event),...however the right shift key + \ does not add the carriage return nor does it act as an SC_CLOSE event.

Then you've got something else going on in your system. Perhaps some other application hooking the keyboard? A virus or trojan? A trainer for some game?
Start the machine in Safe Mode and see if it does the same thing.
There is no keyboard "mapping" to change.

Hi,
My name is Liran, Im working on a project that the server is written in java technology (APACHE TOMCAT) and we considering now to turn the client to windows application instead of web. Our main option is to choose .net c# as our client technology and the connection to the server will be by web services on the server side (the webservices is written in java).
I already made a prototype to check it and it worked really good.
Im trying to get some information about the risks that i need to take into consideration if i choose this option. so if someone already dealt with it ill really appriciate your help.

What are you talking about? Force Windows to use what?
Are you talking about replacing the Date/Time Control Panel applet? You'll have to write a new control panel app and just replace the timedate.cpl with yours.

I can't download any file which has the extension of rss from the server, but all the .txt and .rar etc files seem downloadable, Is it because of some kind of file type registration mechanism of Win 2003 or

I solve the problem by adding an entry in MIME type of specific website property HTTP header, which has the extension of .rss and MIME type RSS File. But I wonder why .rar file doesn't have the entry but still downloadable?

While my PC is running and electricity goes off unexpectedly, it does not shut-down permanently. It restarts automatically on restoration of electricity.
I am using Windows XP and I have set Home/Office desk Power Scheme under display properties. But it does not help.
How can I set my PC so that it does not automatically restart on restoration of electric power.
Any help is appreciated.

Try using command "msconfig" and disable all startup program exept antivirus and firewall. Try disabeling Windows Update. Try to scan hard disk for any viruses and spyware
If this doeasn't help let me know.
Do you want to run 24 hour per day? How frekvently does it happent? Is this a Power Failure?
