The easiest way to get around the limitations in VS's image editors is to not use them. Create your images in another editor (even MS Paint is better). If the editor can save .ico files then you are all set, just import the file into your project. If it can not save .ico files then do a simple copy and paste into VS's editor (up to 256 colours).
You can also use the IconPro sample from MSDN[^] to create icons from bitmaps.

Yesterday, I put all the code in the usb pen drive from my office (thanks those ports were not disabled  ) and brought home. On my PC i opened the same program and as you type the functions and press ctrl+space or sometimes it automatically shows all the functions for the object, those were not seen on my PC. so how to make this listing visible in this case. is there any problem with the set up of Visual studio.

Delete Project.ncb, Project.clw and Project.aps file and reopen your project file!

suppose i have a list control which i draw a vertical gradient as the background.
now, suppose i want to draw the state of selection. my code should be as follows:
if (bIsItemSelected)

..... draw the selected item
}
else
{
.... just draw the text and erase any previous selected drawings
}
problem is that if an item once was selected,and now i am changing to an other item, the selected item (origin one) keeps it selected drawing rectangle....
i'm not sure how to erase it, since i am using a vertical gradient as the list background....
is there a way (maybe using blt?) to tell the list just to draw the text but as transparent?
and erase any previous selected rectangles that may have been drawn?

No such thing as erasing. Perhaps there is a masking sort of technique that would cause an erasing effect. That is beyond my graphics knowledge.
One thing I think would work is to draw the background into a memory DC. When you paint the background you could blt it. When you need to perform the erase effect you could blt just the rectangle that has become invalid.

well, aparently working with memDC solved the problem
it draws only what it needs and keep the original state
the bitblt does all that work

well, I've figured out that the problem was the LVS_SMALLICON...so i've changed it to LVS_REPORT and it is drawing propely.
now i have a new problem, the LVN_ITEMCHANGED is not being called???
help?

firstly, the is VB.NET, so it wont be converted directly to C++ but into Managed C++
secondly, why don't you do yourself ? because you don't understand the original code, or because you don't know C++ ?

I'm a university student. I enjoy programming and am in favour of Java, but I have seen that C++ .NET can offer alot to the programmer. I am not asking for you to do it all, I have attempted to do it myself. I am not sure as to how well I am foing however, could you please direct me in the direction of a tutorial site to aid me if you feel I am going to benefit in an unproper way.
I need to understand from scratch how to do it. I am really sruggling with obtaining the methods from the avicap32.dll and the user32.dll, am I having problems because I am making a .NET application. I haven't a clue as to how to do this. Some guidance, any, is appreciated.

I have a App which is associated with an specified file type... So when i execute this data file, my application will be launched...
My Problem is that in this situation the data file will be locked and f.e. i can't rename them...
Exist any solution to prevent this locking mechanism ?
