But i'm gonna do some more searching in the registry... i think all i searched for before was "MSDN" so i'm gonna look through "VS" and "Visual Studio" searches... *SIGH*

and to no avail... I cant even see what executable the shortcut is calling to try and do some funky hack job in the registry! and just so you know i've installed msdn onto my computer from our dev server, so when i run anything from MSDN (samples, etc) it accesses the file from the server, but i still dont know what the executable is...
i believe the old one is just using "hh.exe" and then the path of the collection (*.col) right after.. but 2002 has a bit of a change (file types, etc) and i cannot find the executable... any suggestions are invaluable, but i'm moving on, i'm not fooling with it unless you guys have a suggestion... *sigh*
i'm gonna try to contact microsoft, i checked their site, there was some things that were close, but not good enough, (mostly bugs in installing msdn w/ DVD)
thanks guy(s?) for your help, i appreciate it immensely!!

Are you trying to install Jan 2002 MSDN with Version 6 of Visual Studio? If so they aren't compatible. MSDN Jan 2002 only works with Visual Studio.NET. The last version of MSDN to work with VS6 was October 2001.

Hello,
I am wondering how it is possible to create a file on the System that can be accessed by some file API's, but yet it is not a hidden or System file. I use CrypKey for protecting software products and know that the product works by creating a foot print on a physical disk that indicates that at some time, a product was installed. I can look at a file monitor and see a particular file being opened, but it is not viewable as either hidden or System.
Any thoughts here would be greatly appreciated.
Best Regards,

I'm not sure, but I found one today while deleting all of my files on the ol' work PC that had an icon, but no filename! If you could duplicate that, then create a program icon that was all white and transparent, you'd be in!

When I tried to install W2k sp2 the POS complained "You are not running the printer spooler" (no sh*t Sherlock I thought, I haven't got a printer connected). You know what it did? The POS refused to install!
Could this be something similar, you have turned off some services that you have absolutley no need for? Just an idea.
Great bussiness idea: Release service packs and the refuse to install them!

Hi,
I am new in driver writing. So I have many questions.
Can I send data to another computeron the network(TCP/IP) in filter driver's routine?
e.g., I write a block of data to a backup server when i detected that this block of data is writed to local disk.
Thanks a lot.

I don't think you can, you don't have a socket library in kernel mode AFAIK. You (and most definitely the user of this) would probably be better of with pairing it with a service and sending the data from the service anyway.
|
|
|
|
|
Is that service runing in kernel mode, then it can expote it's functions to driver? or the driver triger the service as an interrupt service routine?
|
|

Is that service runing in kernel mode
Services are much like normal processes in that they run in user-mode, often under the System account.
As for how you signal your service and move the data to be sent between the service and the driver... Well, something you'd have to do yoursel, no?
You might want to have a look at e.g. FileMon from sysinternals. IIRC there's already a functioning driver<->app communication set up there and you could probably "borrow" a few snippets.

The Filemon use a timer in user mode part, when it is the time then it get information from the output buffer. That not what i want, i need driver to triger some thing to do the data transfer not passive save it then wait
I donot know if there is one book on this topic?

The Filemon use a timer in user mode part
Ouch, didn't know that.
You should probably have a look at:

I have a very small network at home consisting of a desktop, which also acts as an ICS gateway, and a laptop. Both systems are running WinXP Pro. Infact, I have just installed it on my laptop and notice that it's constantly communicating with my desktop PC using TCP port 2869 (ICSLAP). Is this normal? Can I stop it doing this? It's a little annoying since my HD is being accessed during this. So far, the only way to stop it is to disable my network adapter when I don't need LAN or Net access. Anyone got any ideas?
Cheers,
Free

Just wondering if anybody had any C++ code or Perl Script that emulates the wget program [linux]. I've read your C# artical on this Nish.. very interesting
You or anyone else have any C++ [for a linux system] or PERL that would do the same.

Why would you want a wget emulator when you can compile your own wget.exe?
D/I it from
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/wget/wget-1.7.tar.gz
and compile it. Maybe you need to tweak the makefile to use "del" instead of "rm", but IIRC it compiled right out of the box.

Hi ,
I need to do data mirror:
when there are some changes to protected files then just backup the changed part to the same name file under another folder. so I need a kernal driver filter.
But if there are new file created in the protected folder. i need to create a same name file under the other folder too, but how can i create a new fileobject in the driver routine?
Thanks in advance!

Look at ZwCreateFile or NtCreateFile in the DDK - this is essentially what the CreateFile routine in the windows subsystem maps to.

What is a good antivirus software for Windows 2000 Server. I just installed Win 2K Server at home (Came with Visual Studio .Net) and am having a nightmare dealing with Nimda and codered type viruses (I finally downloaded and installed all the latest patches from MS) . My McAfee software which I used on Win 98 says it works on all windows platforms except 2000 Server.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Ranjan
