Of course the Amazon link isn't listed, to the left of the banner ad at the top is an image that says Banners, clicking that takes you to the list of ads.

I banged out a JavaScript function that will take the text in a field and wrap it in link tags and then append it to the message area. Similar to the "Quote Selected Text" button you have now.
I figured you could put another button next to the "Quote" button and a small text field next to that. Then users could paste a URL into the field in whatever form and click the button and it would process it into the message. This saves users the typing of the tags, and makes sure that the damn target is set!!!
This function also adds the "http://" if the user doesn't include it and if someone just clicks the button it will append a blank link tag that they can fill in themselves.
I have included the function within pre tags below. Just call it from a button's onclick and make sure the text field name matches, it should be ready to go otherwise. I tried to match your existing form and field names as best I could to make it as easy to drop in as possible.
Just doing my best to help out as things occur to me.
<script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
<!--
function InLinkErAtor(){
var objContentText = document.MessageForm.ContentText;
var strLinkText = document.MessageForm.LinkText.value;
var strContentText = objContentText.value;
var strOutputLink = "<a href=\"";
if (strLinkText.indexOf("http://") == -1){strOutputLink += "http://"}
strOutputLink += strLinkText + "\" target=\"_blank\">" + strLinkText + "</a>";
strContentText += strOutputLink;
objContentText.value = strContentText;
objContentText.focus();
}
</script>
BTW, if anyone is curious the function name, "InLinkErAtor", is a reference to a brand of garbage disposal here in the states named "InSinkErAtor". I was having garbage disposal problems shortly before writing this.

Good effort Jason. But I guess Chris M might want to use reg exps. They are more flexible.

Thanks.
I would prefer regex myself. In fact that is how I do it elsewhere. I just thought that since he hadn't done it yet perhaps he didn't want to add anything to the message parseing here.
I wrote this before I noticed his post in the ASP forum, and I have been posting to him about it over there since I noticed.

Why don't we chop this sucker up? You know, like have Gdi, Gui, Threads, etcetera etcetera sections...
"Visual C++" is too broad and this can be seen in how many messages go in there. The problem is, if you post a message, and it doesn't get answered in a few seconds, it gets drowned out by all the other ones and then never gets answered...
Ok well a bit of an exaggeration, but still

I don't agree. Too many message forums will lead to many cross forum postings.
It is very rare that a question posted goes beyond the first couple of pages on the day it is posted. If the question isn't answered in a day then it is likely that nobody here has an answer.

You're correct. A better solution would be to modify the forum software to contain predefined categories within forums that the reader could then select via a combobox.

if you are in the lounge there is the
"programming question? try our forums"
little thing.. the rant and rave is called rant and rave in this combobox and not "the soapbox"..
just a little thing.. right now it is perfectly logical for everyone.. but in 6 month?

Hi,
I think an article having a grand total of 4.89/5 from 84 users,
is more popular than on having 5/5 from 6 users.
Why not taking the # of voters in to account also? (84 * 4.89 > 6 * 5)
Were talking about "popular" aren't we?
Bye,
Geert

My formula is wrong:
If 100 voters give an article a 1 that means it's a bad article.
And surely not better/more popular than one getting a 4 of 10 users.
But, my suggestion isn't wrong:
Somewhere there must be a formula to express that
4.89/5 from 84 voters is more popular that 5/5 from a couple of voters.
Anyone a suggestion?
(Because I think that's what you need to implement it, isn't it Chris?)
Bye,
Geert.

Many people have thier own methods of rating articles. Some of them seem well done but have a very low score. Trying to modify the current formula doesnt seem worth it imho. Especially when people are voting a 1 on certain articles just to bump thier own in the grand scheme of things.
Just my 2 cp and a cup of mojo.

Unfortunately, using the # responses to weight the rating only works when you have 2 articles of the same rating. But I agree that an article that's been rated 5 by a just a few users is unlikely to be more popular than one rated less than 5 by many more users.

Although the lounge is a great place, is it possible to add a link to it in the discussion boards page, and also at the top of any other board your viewing in the same format as ther others, like
The Lounge (136000/3), showing how many new posts there are?
This would bring this one board in line with all the rest and make CP have a more consistent user interface across the board(s).

This won't quite meet your needs, but what i've done is added this link to my links toolbar. This way at least i see post counts for the other forums while in the lounge.

Thanks for the new feature Chris, where the forum sorts itself in such a manner, so that the post you reply to is shown on screen. This is such a brilliantly beautiful feature for threads with more than 25 posts. Now we go straight to the post in question. Good idea and excellently executed. I know this is the "Suggestions" forum, but I had to post it here as I didn't find a "Thank You" forum anywhere
