Is there a browser property which tells when the page is completely loaded, with all images and text completely rendered and ready to be viewed?
The page may not be fully rendered even though document.readyState=="complete". If I look at the status bar I can see images still downloading and the page is not fully rendered.
I thought I might read the status via script, but window.status is not providing any text (IE7).
What I'm trying to do is cover the page with an opaque looping FLASH animation until the page underneath is ready to be be viewed at which point I will stop the animation and hide it so that the page underneath is revealed.

There is a simple way to detect this.
in the body tag use the on.load parameter.
(on.load does not have a period in between the on and the load but this forum blocks that word)
so an example is:

Thanks for this advice Brad, I do run an setup function with on.load ... the problem I'd been having was with images when I updated the page... I wanted them to be fully cached at the time the hidden DIV they were in was displayed. I think I've got it solved now... I do a caching routine using new Image()... loading them into an array. I then check the readyState of those images at a time interval... when all register as "complete" I reveal the DIV.

Hi, I wonder if someone can help, please
I am coding up a web application using ASP, C#, and a bit of javascript, and wish to enable videos from the server to be played in a popup window. I am using Windows Media Player.
Two specific questions I have:
1. I want the video to start playing automatically as soon as possible after the popup window opens, and so want to make use of the video buffer to stream. At the moment, however, the video loads but won’t start playing until the video is fully loaded. I have noticed that the windows media player is not displaying at the bottom of the player the fact that it is buffering, and wonder if anyone can help. I probably need to change some default parameters when popping up the window and running windows media player? Any ideas?
2. Also, I’d like to show a 'gallery' of videos that are available, similar in principle to that shown in windows explorer when viewing a directory of videos. I’d like the first frame of a video to be displayed to give some indication of content, and I wonder if anyone knows how to do that without going to the trouble of playing the first frame, capturing it, and displaying it as a static graphic. Any ideas?

Are your windows media files coming off a media server or a web server? You can set the size of the buffer when the file is encoded for files being fed from a media server. If the file is coming from a web server the clients media player settings will determine how of the media to download before playback begins (known as "progressive download")

I'm unsure what is the difference between a 'media server' and a 'web server', (and so it's probably the latter.)
The file is simply one that is uploaded onto the server, and then read back from the server when presented in the media player. There is no encoding that takes place on the media file itself.
I'm unsure how to set the client's media player to perform progressive download, although can see some of the buffer parameters when inspecting the properties during run-time.

a web server delivers data as fast as it can, in bursts... great for delivering files but not for the constant bitstream that streaming media requires... hence media servers. If the media is Windows Media and is delivered from a web server (HTTP) then it will automatically come down to the client media player as a progressive download. If it is delivered from a Windows Media Server (for instance, check out VitalStream's services and a streaming media host) AND the URL is mms://..../mymediafile.wmv and NOT http://......../mymediafile.wmv is will be streamed at a constant bitrate (the media file stays on the media server... the ongoing bitstream is read and discarded at the client).

I am downloading from a web server, but want progressive downloading in the way that you describe happens via a media server, I think. In sum, I just want the media player to play the first amount of data downloaded while the remainder is downloading, (displaying the buffer contents, if you like.)
Do you know how to do that using the web server technology? I have before downloaded a media file from a standard linux server, and Windows Media Player at the client took care of buffering etc. But you seem to be suggesting that the Windows Server I have will have to be especially configured for streaming?

If you will be having a lot of "hits" its better to locate the media on a media server for the sake of quality delivery. If you run a small web server, you can use Windows Media Encoder (can be downloaded from MSDN downloads) to handle up to 10 connections for streaming the windows media to the client. If you just want to make the file available for download... all you have to do is put the file on your web server and Windows Media Player will handle the download and the buffering and playback during download. I can't speak for other streaming media types since I work exclusively with WinMedia... but I'm pretty sure they are the same as far a progressive download. The best way to feed a file to the client is to use an playlist file that refers to the actual movie or audio file(s) you wish to make available. Download the Windows Media Player SDK... its very thorough.

From what I can Remember this function if open not allowed in HTML pr JavaScript.
This is for the obvious reason that people don't want websites accessing their files.
You may be able to do this however, through the nightmare that is Java. I think that6 an applet would be able to call a file.
Oh well good luck with this.

I will preface this by saying I am not a programmer. I can usually customize code to suit my needs but that's about it.
I hope I can describe what I am looking for.
I am looking to count how many times a button (just an image with a _blank url) is pressed and show that count on another page.
I've attempted to Google this with no good results.
If you can't help me can you point me in the right direction? I'm doing this for work. Not something I am hired to do but as a freelancer I try to give as much as I can.

I have a question about uploading files with PHP that I was hoping someone could help me with. I am able to upload a .txt file to a directory I created called uploads, however when I open the file with my text editor it is blank. When I list the files in this directory with the ls –la command it says the owner of the file is apache and not my username. The permission are –rw-------, so I do not think I have read permission since I am not the owner, however it will not let me change the permissions on the file. It says, changing permissions is not permitted.

When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.)
the problem occur when the web site run into the server but
when run into vwd the page work correct
in vwd i used the data base in the server
i use vwd2005

Is the SQL Server on the same box as the web app? if so try using localhost as the host location.
or else you have to confiore the access rights in your SQL Server to allow connections from the IP of the box you are connecting from. Remember that if it not in your LAN you use your IP, else you use your... LAN IP (im tired).
