Hey Chris,
I have a suggestion for the emoticons.asp page.
How about adding JavaScript to allow IE users to copy the emoticons to their clipboard by clicking on the text or the graphic of the desired emoticon?
I saved a copy of the html output of the page and added the code I am talking about. I posted it on my domain so you could see what I mean. Link [new window]
Just a thought, I would find it really useful when modifying messages.

Here is the Javascript function that does the work:
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
function ClipBoard(TextToCopy) {
TextBuffer.innerText = TextToCopy.innerText;
CopiedText = TextBuffer.createTextRange();
CopiedText.execCommand("Copy");
}
</SCRIPT>
This has to be in the body somewhere to act as a buffer:
<INPUT type="hidden" ID="TextBuffer" STYLE="display:none;">
This is what I did to the text of the first emoticon:
<SPAN ID="Emoticon1" onclick="ClipBoard(this);">{smiley text here}</SPAN>
This is what I did to the img tag of the first emoticon:
<IMG src="smiley_smile.gif" align=absMiddle onclick="CopyToClipBoard(Emoticon1);" border=0>

Thanks Nish.
If you liked that, you'll probably love the next bit.
(I am posting another suggestion in just a second.)
<edit>
Actually, I changed my mind. I do have another suggestion, but it is getting late here and I am going to go home and sleep on it. I have it working, but I think I can make it snazzier looking if I am not so tired. So I will post it tomorrow sometime instead.

Thanks Carlos.
It is good to get some positive feedback. I so rarely get any at work.
Actually David has it right below, the emoticons should really be inserted into the textarea in the parent window.

I'll wait and see what suggestion #2 is before I do anything

Suggestion #2 should (IMHO) be to have them inserted automatically. If you use a window.open() to open up the page of smilies, then just like you have the smilies at the bottom of the reply box inserting their own code, you can use window.opener.document dot blah blah and have the ones in the other window do it.
Of course, you probably already know that, but still :P

That was what I would have done, but I didn't have the time to figure out how Chris was opening the window.
Actually suggestion #1 was just something that occured to me while I was working on suggestion #2. You are absolutely correct, that would definitely be the way to do it David.

I understand.
Actually suggestion #2 has very little to do with the emoticons. Suggestion #1 was really just something that occured to me while working on suggestion #2. I do have a #3 that occured to me last night while I was sleeping on suggestion #2. Hmm, this is getting confusing... maybe I should start using code names.
I talked to nish last night before I went home and he had a couple of ideas about the primary suggestion I am working on. This got me thinking about things and I came up with a couple of additions. I am going to finish nish's suggestions and the new ideas before I post it. I'll get it up sometime today.

I would be happy to have the help, but Suggestion #5 seems to have slipped into a space/time warp and caused a transporter malfunction. Consequently it seems to have ceased to have ever existed.
You could make comments on my main suggestion above though!

Ok Chris, I still have one bug to kill and I have some ideas to make it more cross browser compatible so I am going to wait until later on today or maybe this weekend to post the suggestion I am working on.
Sorry to string everyone along like this, but I think it will be worth it.

I was so excited by this I almost ruptured my spleen!
Then I noticed that it costs money. Ah well, it is certainly worth it. Very nice widget. I just have NO budget for the things I wanted a spell check for. (Personal projects and all that)
Nice find though Nick. I am going to keep it in mind for when I have a budget for something I am working on.

Yes, but the price really isn't too bad all together.

No really it isn't.
I was just hoping for a free interface to something like ASpell so I could do it without spending anything. I am such a cheapskate.

Looks good, but I wonder how much load it places on the site? We can't use Java applets so a server side spell with Javascript interface probably uses callbacks or something. I'm not sure if having perfectly spelled forum posts is really worth the hassle. It kind of takes the flavour and sponteneity out of posting.
(Besides, if I have another spell checker tell me 'flavour' is spelled incorrectly I'm gonna heave it out the window)
cheers,

Deal,
I just thought I would point it out to you because we had the conversation in the past about it. I didn't mean, honestly to point you to anything with Java . Just thought it was interesting.

I've got nothing against Java (apart from the fact that it's slower than a sloth on valium) - it's just after Sun and Microsoft had their little hissy fight Java is no longer something that can be relied upon to be present.
But I guess we should be glad that thay have these fights for the good of all consumers.

With Microsoft (i.e. - MSDN) being a premium sponser, they might prefer that you stay away from JAVA related products.

Right, we should let more companies be more parentalistic over what the consumer needs. I don't think so, do you?

Attempting to searh code project keeps giving me an error page (below).
I'm attempting to search for 'base 2' (as I want to know how to express a number in binary rather than base 10 or hex).
The destination url is: http://www.codeproject.com/info/search.asp?target=base+2&st=kw&qm=all
The error returned is:
ADODB.Command error '800a0e7d'
Requested operation requires an OLE DB Session object, which is not supported by the current provider.

Just keeping you busy Chris!

Chris, I wasn't going to say anything because it souded like others were having the same problems and you were working on it but I am not getting ANY notifications.
I have been trying to live with it, but it is starting to drive me absolutely batty.
I have not gotten a single notification in about two weeks, (not exactly sure of the time span just guessing here). I get the newsletter Ok, just not any notifications.
I am using the e-mail adress all the time, so I know my end is working.
Sorry to be a pest, but I have trouble keeping up without my notifications. Threads get buried so fast.
