My new HP laptop is going crazy. The adapter when plugged in takes really really some five minutes. The indicator glows yellow for a while before indicating green (for charging).
Called the local reseller and he couldn't advise convincingly. Any clues?

Check your laptop manual, may be it give you some information relate to your laptop or check the website for further information such as its knowledge base article.

I had a similar problem; I noticed that my battery life had dropped over 2 weeks from 2 hours to 40 minutes, and from time to time the power light on the front of the computer would flash when the computer was charging.
I downloaded the HP Battery Check from their support website to check the battery, which told me to contact HP as my battery was damaged (and the pc was under warranty).
This did not solve the problem as the battery would charge 2% then the power light would flash again (and would not charge).
As the whole pc was under warranty, I sent my old battery, my new battery and the portable to HP and they ended up changing the internal charge management card, and I believe the mainboard too...
You can search HP's site for more info. What PC do you have? (I'll look up their maintenance manual for your beast )
Other solution; if you are still under guarantee, send it back, if not, either get a guarantee extension or think about a new PC!
Cheers,
Daniel

There are three different types of "libraries" in Linux. Static Libraries, Shared Libraries and Dynamically Loaded (DL) Libraries.
The first kind is linked with your binary code, the second type is loaded from a shared location during application startup and the third kind is loaded by code some time after startup. DL libraries would be used for plugins and other libraries which are optional/interchangable. Shared libraries are used to save space (different applications "share" a library) and static libs are used if you need to provide a special version for your application or to make it easier to run a multiple-dependant-application.
See this HOW-TO[^] for further information.

Sebastian

Hi All,
I would like to find out if there any way to change the path for the swap(pagefile.sys) file. In particular i want to be able to change the partition in which the pagefile resides.
Is there a sample code, blogs, article or function can I see?
Thanks,

Select the 'Advanced' tab
Click on 'Settings' under 'Performance'
Select the 'Advanced' tab
Click on 'Change' under 'Virtual Memory'
Make the changes you want.

Also note that you can create multiple swap files.

Hi Friends,
Iam facing with a peculiar problem.
OS is Suse Entreprise Linux 9.
Some applications are updating a file..
I would like to MONITOR all operations of a file.
Is there any tool or command to do the same..
In a Nutshell: I want to track what all applications accessed a file or written into a particular file.
Thanks a lot.

Inotify is already included in current kernels, no rebuilding needed. The article was written while it was still in development.

Hi Mark,
I see that inotify comes built into kernel in SuSE 10 but my problem is in SuSE 9. I checked on the machine but i couldn't find inotify.
Any help is highly appreciated.

I don't know either of these, but the Link says "dnotify replacement", so I would look into dnotify.
Duh!

try "tail -f /var/log/etc" it may not show you what you want but it's a start. The tail command is very useful.

I found from a link that Symantec Antivirus does not currently ship or support the commandline scanner albeit it is available from Tools/ folder of the CDROM. However, we have the menu in Windows Explorer when you right click a file which reads as 'Scan for Viruses ...'.
What EXE does it invoke on selecting the same?
FOUND AN UPDATE: There is an explorer extension shell called vpshell32.dll which http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/autoruns.mspx[^] indicates. How to invoke it?

USB devices can advertise both a specific vendor ID and device ID, and one or more 'generic' device IDs. One of them is known to Windows as 'USB Mass Storage Device'.
The industry collectively have agreed on a specification for such devices and, if the specification is followed, device-specific drivers are not required - the same driver can be used for all such devices.
USB hard drives, pen drives, cameras, portable music players - all of these offer a USB Mass Storage Device function, and can all be controlled using the same driver.

My NT4 testbox reads them, but it has so much other stuff installed I don't know if it's provided by the base OS or one of the things added afterwards.

I think it was added by one of the updated Internet Explorer versions (4?). You'll have to clarify what program it is that is reading the PNGs.
Windows' CreateDIBSection function supports PNGs as of Windows 98 or Windows 2000, according to MSDN (see under BITMAPINFOHEADER ).

Thanks. IN that case I'm good since I'm hoping to use them as read only images in IE6 required HTML (not my choice).
