I have tried... sad thing is, I know it's simple..
What is the regular expression characters(s) for "match any number of any characters"?
eg:
Can someone pls give me a regular expression that will return true if the input matches the bignning of the test
eg, I want to test input against "dagwood"
d would match
da would match
dag would match
wood would not macth
xyzdagwood would not match

The "*" matches zero or more matches; the "+" matches 1 or more matches, and the "?" matches zero or one matches.
I don't really understand what you want? If you want to find words that either start with d or da or dag this works:
\b(d|da|dag)(?:[a-z]*)
Regex^ rx = gcnew Regex("\\b(d|da|dag)(?:[a-z]*)");
MatchCollection^ matches = rx->Matches("dog daddy dagwood wood xyzdagwood");
for each (Match^ match in matches)
{
Console::WriteLine(match->Value);
}</code>

Thanks but... sort of..
.. what you've provided will almost do, but what I need is a genereic expression that says "if what you type in is a match for the beginning of my word ["dagwood" in this example] then I'll return true"
The word dagwood may change though, so I'll be building up the regex dynamically; it may be any length; so I can't explicitly cover all possibilities as in your example.
cheers...

Wouldn't the StartsWith method of the string class do?

StartWith what though?
Suppose I want to check their input aganst the word "Dingbat"
they type "x" - I want to return false;
they type "D" - true;
they type "Dx" - false;
they type "Di" - true;
So how would I use StartsWith in this contecxt?
And can it be case-insensitive?

There is an overload that takes a StringComparison parameter that you can use to control case sensitivity and culture.

thanks but I ned something more generic than that - I can't be building up tests for every possibility. I want something that says:
"If your input matches any part of the start of my word I'll return true"
cheers

Take another look at what I wrote, and think about how the strings that you wrote as "they type" corresponds to the literal strings I offered as examples. Perhaps you could use a variable?

I remember this exception from when I was creating entries in the event log in an application, is this something which you are doing?
I think specifically its adding items to a new event log (ie not application, security, etc) and you need specific permissions to create this.
If this is not something which your application does then please post back.

thanks for your reply
yes the application is tryin to write to the event log using Microsoft dlls the error is specifically related to the following 3 dlls
Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data.dll
Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Configuration.dll
Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Common.dll
from what i understand of the error bein dispayed these are trying to write to the event log but do not have the permissions needed
thanks again

If you search functionality causes a postback (which I think you have) you can use stylesheets to highlight the matches.
for example if a user enters a search string, you can use regular expressions to find matches and replace those matches so that a html tag surrounds the match (searchmatch ).
Doing so client-side will be pretty complicated... not having a solution right now :->

I have created maps in microsoft mappoint 2006 that i want to display on a Sharepoint site. As the maps are already created I don't think I need the SOAP service. I do need the search, pan and zoom control so just displaying the .gif of the map will not cut it. Idon't want to install MP2006 on everyones desktop just to inherit the controls.
Does anyone know how to build the web part to display preexisting maps (ex: Florida.ptm, Texas1.ptm etc.) will the search, zoom and pan controls in the browser window?
I would really appreciate anyones help.
Here is an example on Live Earth

A fine blend of Response.Clear() and then OK should work.

Hi Guys,
Is there a way to convert the Imagemap from HTML to Imagemap of ASP.Net?
Please see HTML below
<html>
<head>
<title>203-480 Coronation Bar</title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
</head>
<body bgcolor="#FFFFFF" leftmargin="0" topmargin="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0">
<!-- ImageReady Slices (203-480 Coronation Bar.psd) -->
<img src="images/203-480.jpg" width="463" height="476" border="0" alt="" usemap="#id203_480_Map">
<map name="id203_480_Map">
<area shape="rect" alt="" coords="398,270,441,292" href=""data: show part " onClick="return showPart(130030-11);"">
<area shape="rect" alt="" coords="398,147,433,169" href=""data: show part " onClick="return showPart(110230-11);"">

Hi Vasudevan,
Actually, what I only need it how am I going to include the html code inside the asp.net without using the built-in asp.net imagemap control.
Do you think it is possible?
