Does anyone know how to start Win2K from a remote machine without physically turning the machine on? (Yes, the machine is plugged in, and electricity is flowing to it at all times.)
It might sound crazy, but if you can shut your machine down without physically turning it OFF, why wouldn't you be able to do the opposite and start it up, without physically turning it ON?
I'm talking something almost similar to hibernating, in which the machine turns itself on at a certain time you had instructed it to do so. This, however, is for it to turn itself on upon receiving instruction to do so from a remote terminal.
Might there be something in the BIOS you can activate to do this?

Good point

Nope, it has to do with the network card. There are types of Network Cards that can remotely turn on PC (of course this needs to be supported by the BIOS as well). Technology is called WakeupOnLan.
It is based by sending a special packet (MAGIC PACKET) to your NIC and it will turn on the computer.

I notice that (in Win200 at least) the check on the 1st 2 bytes of an exe being 'MZ' does not take place.
Anything known?

It does on my win2k machine.
I just changed MZ header and file turned into MS-DOS executable.
.EXE files on windows are PE files and therefore should adhere to the standard specified.

Venet, thanks, but what I meant was that if you change the MZ (which appears in all exes) to, say, XX, then it still runs.
There was a time when the OS complained if this signature was not present.

Sorry for misunderstanding.

What OS was this ?

I've a Windows 2000 Server which currently has two phyiscal hard disks. The partitons look a little like this:-
Disk 1 (60GB)
=======
c:\ 2GB (used to be Win98) Boot Partition
d:\ 30GB (mirrored onto disk 2)
e:\ 10GB (Windows 2000 Server System Partition)
f:\ 18GB (stuff)
Disk 2 (30GB)
========
30GB mirror of d:\
What I want to do is copy d:\ to a new 60GB disk, use Disk 2 as the system boot partition, and then mirror my new 60GB disk onto the current disk 1. Is is imperitive that the Windows 2000 installation is not corrupted in any way as it runs my entire network.
Can anyone give any pointers about the best way to do this? I can get access to Partition Magic if needs be.

Using Ghost maybe ?

Hi,
I wanna install a new version of Windows (W2k) but I encountered a problem.
During installation after copying files from the CD-ROM to the hard disk the computer needs a restart. This is normal.
What is not normal is that after the restart the installation begins from the very beginning with copying files to the hard disk again.
I suspect (but I may be wrong) that the BIOS settings are wrong. I tried CD-ROM and hard disk as first and second boot devices but the same problem persists.
Could somebody give me please a pointer?
Thanks

take out the cd before the computer restarts. That way it doesn't boot from the hd (not cdrom).

I tried that before but the only thing I got was a message: system failure.
This is all about a new computer and I can't install a f#&@ing windows...

are you sure that bios is configured to boot from hd0?
|
|
|

I tried every possibility: hdd-0, hdd-1,hdd-2, cd-rom as first boot device, but still system failure...

no, what I'm saying is set up like this
boot0: cdrom
boot1: hdd0
this way it will boot from cd if a bootable cd is in the drive, and when no bootable cd is present it will boot the os from the hd.

|

This is called first, second and third boot device on my system. I also tried
first boot - cd-rom
second boot - hdd-0
and vice versa
with and without inserted cd, but still the same message.

...and I also know that this configuration works because Win2K was preinstalled by the dealer some hours ago and all OK.
I just wanted to have more partitions by reinstalling windows.
If only I had known this a little earlier I would have been satisfied with one...

Your obsessed with partitions. We'll have to have a look at that.

First I installed 3 but when I saw the problems I deleted them and returned to 1.
Without any effect.

There's your problem! Before I could bring myself to install Win2K Beta3 I had to get roaring drunk. It worked perfectly!
The latest machine (Win2K SP2) I installed cold sober, and have had no end of troubles
