Sounds like you need to pick up a good book and read about this. But the short version of the answer to your question is that you can create most common / every day type .NET Applications on a mobile device as well (even database driven).

As you can read at this link on MSDN, eVB is considered obsolete technology now:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/mobility/windowsmobile/downloads/evb.aspx[^]
I recommend that use a standard Mobile .NET Application instead, but if you are still set on using eVB, you can download and use it for free at the link above.

The list of compatible development tools:
For early versions of Windows CE, there were plugins to MSVC 5.0 and 6.0. However, these reportedly screwed up your environment so you couldn't use it for desktop development any more.
In 2000 Microsoft released eMbedded Visual Tools 3.0, which includes eVC 3.0, which is basically a rebadged VC 6.0 environment that can live side-by-side. This is compatible with Windows CE 2.x and 3.0, including Pocket PC 2000 and 2002.
Windows CE (.NET) 4.x changed some debugging interfaces and so a new version of eVC was required, version 4.0. eVB was dropped. CE 4.1 requires at least SP1, CE 4.2 at least SP2. SP2 was not compatible with CE 4.1, a problem corrected in SP3. SP4 adds support for CE 5.0. In terms of Windows Mobile versions, WM 2003 for Pocket PC and Smartphone are supported but Windows Mobile 5.0 is not.
Windows Mobile 5.0 and 6 require Visual Studio 2005, at least Standard Edition. The free Express Edition is not enough. VS 2005 also supports Windows CE 5.0 platforms and Pocket PC 2003. I believe the support matrix is the same for Visual Studio 2008.
eVC 3.0 and 4.0 do not work on Windows Vista. No fix is planned. If you're running Windows Vista you'll have to run a Windows XP virtual machine if you need eVC.

Hello Pramod,
I would suggest you to check for the following two:
1. Set the Passive mode to On.
2. The username to login to the server has the proper rights.

Hey all,
I am really a fan of notepad, i don't know why, but since I don't have a great editor in my pocket pc, I decided to do one of my own(in C#). But the problem comes when i need to save the format of the text in the textbox it does not save the format at all..., is there a richtext component for the pocket pc in the market?
I was thinking on saving an xml file in a database with all the format for each file but then i will be turning this little notepad application into a huge application because i don't know how many files i will have.... is there any way to save the format and style of the text i have in the textbox???
And how could i open word and pdf documents in the ppc?
Basically i want to be able to use my application to read all sort of documents including .MHT
Thanks all,
Best regards!

Pocket PC is designed to only have full-screen forms. You cannot create a form that is not full screen.
Windows CE creates top-level (non-popup) windows full-screen. Popup windows can be any size you want. However, the standard for Pocket PC says that you should size your popup dialogs to the full size of the screen using SHInitDialog and calling SHHandleWMActivate and SHHandleWMSettingChange in response to the corresponding messages. Microsoft's development frameworks, first MFC and ATL and now .NET Compact Framework all do this for you. To the best of my recollection, .NET Compact Framework does not offer any way to override this.

Hi,
Mike Dimmick wrote: To the best of my recollection, .NET Compact Framework does not offer any way to override this.
It is possible. The "trick" is to set the FormBorderStyle property to None. For example see my blog entry titled "Creating non full screen forms and custom MessageBoxes" available at http://www.christec.co.nz/blog/archives/134[^].
However having said that it's best described as a hack, and there are some issues with my code sample on different versions of the Windows Mobile OS etc. Since I don't really want to encourage people to develop these kinds of user interfaces I'm not inclined to investigate/resolve these issues...
Hope this helps,

Hey
I have created an application where I have added some controls in panels.
But my problem is that i have two very differnt PDA's. The resolution on number 1 is 320 x 280 and at number 2 it is 640 x 480.
I have found out that when i drag and drop controls with visual studio, it doesnt really matter which of my PDA's i use, The contents just fits the screen.
But at another window i have coded some controls into some panels instead of using the Visual Studio drag and drop things. And now at my PDA number 2, the labels and pictures are too small, because i coded in the sizes which fits to PDA number one.
How can i make sure that all my controls will look the same way at both PDA's just like it does when i use the Drag And Drop tools ind VS?

Currently I`m developing a mobile application and I have a following problem: every time I change the current form, the Windows-strip (the one with the Start button, etc) appears at the very top of my application. It disappears only when I click on my application.
How to get rid of it constantly?

Are you trying to do a full-screen application? If so, are you leveraging the SHFullScreen API?
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa453694.aspx[^]
http://www.pocketpcdn.com/articles/fullscreen.html[^]
This can get a bit tricky since SHFullScreen doesn't actually hide the start menu and command bar, it just sets them below your window in the Z-order. Therefore, if you show a new window you may have to adjust the z-order again. It's a bit tricky, but hopefully one of those articles above will help.
