i've been developing a server application for almost a year now. It was actually the bit that got me my new job, however i'd like to take it further and develop a business around it.

I'm more of a traditional guy: My new years resolution is to quit smoking. Ooh wait I don't smoke :S
Anyhow this year is going to be an exciting year. I got two projects to keep running as lead developer. It's something I wanted for a long time and I can't wait to get started.

I plan to add vastly more comments to clarify existing comments and even to place those additional comments reasonably near the existing comments they are meant to clarify, whenever I can remember what the existing comments meant in the first place. Or maybe just use random quotations from really bad off-off-Broadway dramas set in the 1930's Dublin slums.

That's what I selected, but not in relation to software development, but rather life.
It's always fun learning new things in life like learning a language (no programming language!), learning how to drive a new vehicle (like a boat) or just develop your character, being more friendly to other people, being less shy and many other things.
That's what really counts for me, learning new stuff for my job just comes second (or third, forth).

Absolutely. That is one development tactic that has saved me from re-writes many many times.
Don't write any code until you know for sure what the user/client wants (and don't trust specifications either) and that he really wants it. Something that they have to have this week may be forgotten next week.

And, considering that users typically never know what they want, that really means "don't write any code". Become an "architect" maybe?

I think they would still have to write the specs that change continually, I don't envy them.

I only posted that because I did it some 25+ years ago, and it's the only resolution I've kept. But I've been faithful to the goal, and rarely do anything before it absolutely must be done. As a side benefit, many tasks become unnecessary of their own accord well before the due date, so any work done before that date would have been wasted.

I have learned in my years of work that designing your code to be extensible is one of the biggest (and most time consuming features) but it usually helps a lot when feature X is added in the last minute and if the code was not designed the way it was a lot of code would have been redesigned.

If you're lucky enough to be writing for a client who think they know what they want, spec it out in a document, and then get somebody (at the client) to sign acceptance. I've found this gives you plenty of time, as asking somebody to put a signature on something is tantamount to asking for the Holy Grail.
