Use WindowStation and Desktop objects, they provide virtual window stations and desktops process spaces that WILL NOT be seen from the (interactive) Task Manager.
For more info, lookup "winsta0" in MSDN.

Can someone please tell me (a professional please) what books I should read to start programming games. I want to program my own engines and everything. I have seen that there are a lot of books out there...but which one would be good for a beginner?

;PDirectX SDK Document might be very useful for you. And also, I think the best teacher is the Code itself. I think if you want to do a good game programmer, you should read more code and write more code.

Our company is providing a large solution for Vessel Trafic Monitoring. The part of this project is Vessel Traffic System Database (VTSDB). Most of harbours already have their own databases, so we should be ready for the integration. The first part is creating wrappers to map their tables to VTSDB, but we also want to provide access to the external DB via VTSDB interface. For now i'm looking for the ideas of designing such solution. Do you know where can I find articles describing similar problems.
Thanks.

Have you looked at ADO.NET? OLE DB? ODBC? All of them can be considered unified DB access.

Wouldn't it be cool if we could write the most definitive Windows programming book ever written? It would be one GIANT ebook or pdf file available for a free download, and would cover everything from Win32 programming to .NET. Everyone who wanted to could write a chapter or two on the topic they are the most familiar.

Hi,
I've heard a lot of those features in Windows XP called side-by-side execution of 'assemblies' and thought it was only available for .NET programs.
But then I consider a description on MSDN showing that even unmanaged DLL's (normal libs and COM libs) could be reside version independent on Windows XP using a XML manifest description.
Now I'm looking for deeper instructions how to use that functionality, but I couldn't find any samples or tutorials on MSDN (only the Platform SDK docs).
Hope anyone can help me by stating a good book, link to a tutorial or even some sample code.
Best regards
Andi

I'm developing a few projects in C++ without using MFC (the interface part of the project is not that big). I've been trying to find articles on how to create IE-style menu bars, but the only on I could find was the one on MSDN. However, the article does not explain how one is to subclass the toolbar buttons to make them look like top-level menus (the difference between menus and toolbar buttons is quite evident on Windows XP). It would be much appreciated if somebody could illustrate how this can be done.

You basically create a toolbar with the "list" style, then assign text (but no image) to the buttons. The MSDN article gives a good explanation about how to do the keyboard handling.

I'm currently working on a server application and i've reached an apparently "easy to solve" problem: the management of users' rights. On a first evaluation they only had boolean rights but after a while i have to deal with levels, priorities, groups and so on. The level of abstraction has become so high that i wonder if already exists a standard or a model i could follow (XML would be great).
Do you know if there is an article on CP relative to this subject?
Or some other web resources?

Why not using the Windows built-in features? They are not really easy but there are some nice-to-use libraries around.

I had to move fast. Learning something new could have taken a large amount of time. Meanwhile i have developed an XML-based system good enough for my purposes.
Thanx for the advice. I will certainly follow it in the future.

Articles like this [^]one are actually dealing this topic.
MS quote (http://www.microsoft.com/ddk) : As of September 30, 2002, the Microsoft® Windows® 2000 DDK, the Microsoft Windows 98 DDK, and the Microsoft Windows NT® 4.0 DDK will no longer be available for purchase or download on this site. Support for development will ship at the same time as the Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) release.

I want to have a series of small icons in an image list that i can display in any colour. ImageList has BLEND25 and BLEND50 but no easy way as far as i can tell to use the mask as the shape but draw it in any colour that i choose.
By the way i'm working in unmanaged C++ and MFC.
Ideas/answers anyone?

An article or sample about Least Recent Used Cache or other caching algorithms would be good to read in my opinion.

Goal:
I want to be able to use the Crystal Reports designer, construct a report, drop that report on the client's box, and magicly that report appears as a menu Item under the reports section or appear in some UI of the client's program.
Problem:
Rpt files can store user parameters, and data.
Goal two:
I want to have my application read the .rpt extract the user parameters and display some gui to get information, and then call the viewer with the information already filled out. Additionally since the database location is stored in the rpt file I would need to change that pointer to point to the client's database. (the Client might be using his/her own local db)
Request:
Can we reverse engineer the .RPT format? There is ~5 sections to the file, Root, contents, Data(tlv),Summary. These four I think are just pointers into the final section called Report information.

Use An inifile for the setup info of the crystal report before invoking it

Is it really this easy? I wonder if I can shoot a fly with a .45 cal an inch and a half away.
Are you familar with this process? could you give me a few more pointers?
|
|
|
|
|
You don't need to reverse engineer the RPT format anyway. CR7 and later provide an API to do all of the hard work for you, and there may even be samples on their website.
You could put the reports in an app-specific folder, do a FindFirstFile/Next block to get the names, then open each one and dig out the info for it into a list.
