I've been using CVS for development projects for years, but this year is the first that I've used it for Windows (C#/.NET) projects. It's also my first year working with Visual Studio.
It seems that Visual Studio projects and solutions have added trickiness. .suo, .ncb, and .csproj.user files don't seem to make much sense having in CVS and seem to be problematic also. It also seems that sometimes .sln and .csproj files are troublesome in CVS. There's no good reason for this since they're text (XML) files, but it seems like Visual Studio likes to
randomly reorder these files, causing for occasionally several conflicts. It becomes a bother.
Note that I use WinCvs separate, instead of the Igloo plug-in, which didn't seem to be as rich in features, and integration didn't buy me very much anyhow.
If anyone has been using CVS with Visual Studio project/solutions for some time, please send me some tips and tricks!

Hi, first no part 2 Things became a bit too random. And somethings like adding an existing project is almost impossible. The only time it works, and it works well, is when you start from scratch and add a blank solution, like described about. There is also many limitations (esp with with CVSNT).
Now those files have never been problems for me. I dump just about anything in it (dll's, bmp, tiff).
Cheers
I wish the author (of Igloo) continued where he started....

Something I just realised in my .Net.
After a wshort while somthing happened to my .Net to and after that every time it tried to transfer data to or from the Cvs my .Net just hung. I could use check to see if the repository was ok, but couldn't use it.
Later I tried it with another user on the same machine and it was working ok there, so in my problem I realised that the problem lies in .Net application data in my folder. Deleteing this or copying it from some other user account might solve your problem.

How do you disable frontpage file sharing in VS.NET ?

In the projects propety pages, Web Settings. Good luck though! It seems to support only a single webdirectory with no sub directories . It also doesnt seem to allow add projects that are not in the main soltuions base directory... I'm not really sure what it is as the author has not replied to my emails...

After filling out a survey asking questions about my current project (over 100 files) I figured it was time to look into some sort of source control. Your tutorial made life very easy for me!
I just wish most software wouldn't barf with drives created by subst (ie P: => D:\Projects\ )
Thanks again,

Thanks for reminding me of the handy good ol' DOS commands, they seem to get lost in the Windows world.

I like your article.
I don't know what's wrong with it. I can't open this website.
So could you upload the software to codeproject or tell me where to download
it, does it have some mirror sites?
Anybody?

It works fine for me. It doesn't list any mirrors. The author did not write igloo, and does not have the right to offer it on CP.

It seems to be checking stuff in and out, but when I try to show history or differences, it does nothing - have you used these facilities at all ?

History is outputted to the Source COntrol Output, ugly, but it is there
Doing diffs are not a problem here. What diff program are you using? Are you selecting a version previous to the version you are trying to diff? I found WinDiff to be quite satisfactory.
ALso, another tip. Avoid spaces at all cost. CVS does not like spaces and will fail to work on a *nix system if you were to move it. Also webapps are a pain in the butt. I have tried to contact the author of the inteface, but no reply yet...was hoping some C++ person could perhaps "continue" what he has started on. There is an older source package available...Also I have dumped the latest CVS NT build into the Igloo dir to match that of my "remote" CVS server.
Hope this helps It works for me

of finding out the true Straight Dope.
All this talk of CVS
it seems to be an *awful* mess...
VSS is my trusted friend;
why, pray tell, should this now end?
It all seems much the same to me:
check out / check in / update / repeat.
And yet CVS is set on high,
while VSS is left to die.
There must be a reason! You must have a clue?
Please, help me out, tell me - WHAT should i do?
ok, ok... it's been a *long* day.
