How do you disable and/or block the windows Messenger pop-ups from sending you spam in winXP? I don't use this function for anything. It's just a back door for spammers to tick me off. Please Help.

Try disabling (stopping and setting to manual) the 'Messenger' Service.

I want to execute a .wsf and .vbs file on a win2k box from a linux box. This script will take hell lot of parameter as well. How do I achieve this quickly. The process must not be interactive i.e should not ask for password.
I want to run this from a linux box and it should just execute the command silently.

I am sure there are more practical ways to do it, but for achieving it "quickly", the fastest way I can think of without any real code to write would be to automate the process though SSH.
I would really think about what you want to do to accomplish this, as there are SIGNFICANT security implications if you do this wrong. Anyways.... here would be a simple way to do it:
1) Install Cygwin[^] on the Windows 2000 box and ensure you install the OpenSSH daemon.
2) Set up your SSH daemon to run as a service in W2K. There is a good article on how to do that here[^]
3) Set up your SSH keys so you can SSH into the Windows box without the need for a password with the use of SSH public key authentication. You can learn a bit on how to do that by reading here[^].
4) You should now be able to execute the scripts on the W2K box by automating the call. As an example this might work for ya:
ssh user@w2kbox commandtoexecute
CAUTION: Be careful to understand the implications of setting up SSH to your server. Make sure you have clean ACLs and limit the privileges in what the account you are SSHing in can do. If you require administrative access to run the script, consider using the runas command to do this so that you only elevate privileges for the execution of the script, and nothing more.
P.S> I found the runas command to have some issues under bash in cygwin, so you might have to tinker with this for a bit.

Hello,
I use WinXP Pro. Sometimes CD-ROM Drive disappears???.
I have to go to "Device Manager"->"Scan for hardware changes" then CD-ROM Drive appears again. I don't know why !
Please tell me how to avoid this problem.

A virus or other program has changed the language on all my common controls, whenever anything displays text in a window for the control; dialogs, window titles, save as, etc. the language is germanic. I would assume that this could be fixed in the registry etc.? A virus did this, I have re-installed windows, but the file or entry is still not getting fixed. Has anyone seen this problem and know the registry entry or file(s) to fix to get my language back to English on all the common controls and windows text/messages?

When you re-install Windows, it seems to do a good job of detecting and preserving your previous settings. That's unfortunate in this case. Try using the Regional Settings applet in Control Panel to reset the settings for your preferred language. This applies specifically to Win2K, but I believe other versions have a similar function. As an afterthought, you might also want to check the startup files (config.sys, win.ini, etc) for a CODEPAGE= command. You shouldn't need one, but if it exists it may override the Windows settings; try REMing it out.

Hi All,
I hope this is the right spot for this question. I need to restore the configuration of a computer to its fresh out of the box state. The person who own this machine has (naturally) lost the accompanying disks that belong to the machine. However, I've found the C:\Windows\Options\CABS folder appears to be intact.
Does anyone know how to restore a machine with the contents of the stuff in the CABS folder? Or, better yet, make a bootable rescue disk out of this?
Any help is appreciated.

The CABs folder holds the files that are usually in the \win95 (or \win98 or \winme) dir on the CD, so you can just put that whole directory on a CD and install from it. (Note that there might not be a setup.exe there. Some OEM CDs don't have setup.exe - you have access to the CABs to install other Windows components, but you can't do a fresh install from the CD.)

I have no idea if this is in any way possible but,
I was wondering if it's possible to get the complete hardware list which is used when
detecting new hardware, so all possible hardware supported by windows.
I know microsoft has a hardware compatibility list online, but since hardware detection
uses it also, it has to be somewhere inside the system, my question is Where and more important can I use it in my own programs

I have some customers who have a problem with Windows displaying the wrong character set in various MS common controls. ie. Print Preview, File Open.
This happens in all apps that uses these controls. In XP I found Control Panel|Regional and Language Options|Advanced lets you choose a language for non-Unicode programs to use to display menus and dialogs. One customer is using W2K, and he managed to find the same setting there, but it was already set to "English".
So has anyone seen or heard of this problem and know how to fix it. ie. Get the normal english text back.

Hi,
I'm having some problems. We have an application that we made and when it runs on a dual CPU machine, we lose one CPU after a while.
After checking, we found out that the Process Affinity was changed. We can set it back using the task manager but only to lose it again later. In no way in our code do we set the process affinity. But it seems to happen only when the CPUs are running at 100%.
Can Windows (this was on Windows 2000, Service pack 3) decide to change the CPU access to an application by itself?

I would worry if you have CPU @ 100% on a dual machine. I would not be surprised if the OS took over and changed the settings to make sure that you app did not kill the box.
Is this Win2k server or Pro?

It runs correctly on Windows XP. The problem only seems to be located on Windows 2000 Server/Pro.
But I'm starting to think the same as you, in that the OS decides that the application is taking to much processing power and removes a CPU from the app.

I have a dir on my HDD that is 13,5Gb!!
It's named _RESTORE and is hidden. I don't know if WinME or Win2000 created this (I run both on the same computer) but do you know if there is important data in that file!?!??!
These files are listed inside the dir:
DISKCFG.DAT
SRDISKID.DAT
VxDMon.cfg
VxDMon.DAT
Is there any secure copy of data that is saved by Windows automaticly when crashes happen or what!?!?!?
How can I "run" these to restore the configurations!?!?! if it's necesarey!?

OK, reinstalled a couple of old HP Vectra's (166MHz Pentiums) with 52x CD-ROM's. I installed windows and the few other pieces of software they had from CD's with absolutely no problems.
I have all the latest patches applied from WindowsUpdate. There doesn't seem to be any conflicts or other problems according to Device Manager and System Information.
Now if I place a CD in the drive and either try to install it or copy a file off using Windows Explorer the machine freezes. Completely.
I have no idea why this is happening, what I last did before this started happening. Since I was able to install all the software originally I don't think it is a hardware problem.

It's been over a year now since I installed Win2K SP2 on this machine, and ever since I've been getting this error from DNS. I have tried every solution in the Knowledge Base, every recommendation I can find by searching Google, yet nothing works. I've read every tutorial on Win2K DNS ever published, and studied the Help files until I've gone nearly blind. It doesn't work. One last thing that I haven't tried, only because there's no way I can find to do it, is to implement a recommendation that I 'point Active Directory' to the DNS server. I can find no setting anywhere that matches this terminology - there is no 'DNS Server' setting in any of the Active Directory plugins. Where can I find this setting?

I don't know if this is really the place to post this, but here goes.
I am currently using IE 6.0 on a Windows 98 system (with all current updates). The OS was installed clean. I have also installed Netscape 7.0. Here is my problem:
Intermittantly IE 'hangs'. That is I can browse websites fine, until I click on a link (random) and the IE seems to 'pause' and load and load and load the website - as if the site is not responding. Then, after a period of maybe 3 &1/2 minutes, it loads the website no problem. This is not a network problem, as during the 3&1/2 minute pause I can start Netscape and load the site fine. In fact, this never occurs if I browse using Netscape. Furthermore, if I try entering http://www.hotmail.com in the address bar of IE, it WILL NOT load the site, ever. Again, Netscape 7.0 loads it trouble-free.
I have tried reverting to IE 5.5, but I continue to get the same results. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

According to my ISP, there is a problem with IE6 SP1. For a long time I've thought I was the only one having trouble - every two days or so I click on a link and the whole server freezes, and nothing will fix it but a complete restart of the system. My ISP reports to me that every customer who has SP1 installed on IE6 is having the same problem. Microsoft has not acknowledged it, nor offerred a solution yet, and I have not found any third party that can confirm the problem or recommend a fix. Frustrating, eh? I am beginning to feel an attraction to penguins, for some odd reason...

There is a problem with IE6 SP1 the best way to sort this out is to uninstall the SP1.You can do this in XP\2k by going to add\remove programs but From XP\2K downwards the Service pack gets embeded into the operating system.So in that case its a Rinsatall of the operating system to get rid of this problem.

Good idea. According to my ISP, though, the remove programs option also wipes out the repair option and corrupts the IE6 installation on all the Win2K systems he's tried it on. Granted, he's not the sharpest tool in the shed, but he does keep good notes on what he's tried for his customers. I'm hopeful that MS will one day release a fix for the problem - re-installing the OS is not an attractive option.
