On Windows:
netstat -a
This will list all connections and listening ports.
As far as opening and closing ports, that depends on what services are running and/or any software running at the time, or software you create that opens its own ports.

I've been asked to look at ways to install XP without using the XP installing.
Let me clarify that.
A client wants to install a very cut down version of XP.
He doesn't want to circumvent the activation either.

Any ideas on the best way to approach this ?

Some ideas:
. Sysprep from Microsoft
. an automated installation response file (sorry, I don't recall how to create it, but on Technet you'll surely find it).
. If a high degree of "cutting down" is required, you could use Windows XP Embedded Edition, which will allow you to remove almost everything but the kernel and HAL from Windows XP.

Got some wacky things of my own to report - don't know if you can help, though.
Explorer pops up to the front when any explorer sends a change message.
Explorer navigates to "C:\windows\desktop\desktop" and then complains that "C:\windows\desktop\desktop\desktop" has been moved or removed
Explorer turns all drive/folder/virtual folder icons to folder icons and removes their names.
It does all of this whenever it feels like.

I feel horrible that I cannot find the answer to this myslef by searching around the computer but ... the darn thing is in German.
I have a computer that is at a friends house that has been played with by a bunch of young kids that love to mess around with different settings. Well, one of them managed to switch the system language (actually it seems to be contained within Window Explorer and Internet Explorer) to German instead of English.
Nobody will fess up to doing and the heck if anyone else knows how to fix it ... I have searched through all of the option menus in WE and IE, even the options available under the Control Panel. Any suggestions? I hope I am just missing an obvious section.
Thanks in advance ...

Control Panel->Regional Options->Change the Menus and Dialogs combo to the desired language.
Of course, the items won't be called "control panel" and "regional options" anymore, so finding them in German is left as an exercise for the reader. (hint, the Regional Options is the one with the picture of a planet that looks nothing like Earth)

Does anyone know how to force Windows Explorer to retain a certain size permanently?
I have a problem where Windows Explorer will frequently resize itself to something other than the size I set it. Symptoms: Windows will quickly but visibly hiccup (the screen goes through a quick redraw). The next time I open Windows Explorer, it will be a different size than when I last set it. This new size is always consistent.
Is it just me or has Windows Explorer become more buggy with each successive iteration?

Write the commands in a file and make it executable with chmod +x . You can add
#! /bin/sh as the first line, but that's not required.

I have installed Office 2k on my XP box and everything works fine. My problem is whenever I log into windows using a different user name for the first time, and I start any office application, a windows installer will appear prompting me to install Office. I'd like to know if there's any way to not see this for every new user?

Not yet - I read that the Framework 1.1 is supposed to be downloadable in "Mid-April".

Hello,
The problem is: sometimes you have to do automatically configuration (logonscript, etc) in the context of the user-account. But somtimes you don´t have all the rights in the user context to do all this configuration.
In XP there´s runas.exe, which works fine, but is not scriptable. And its not smart to call exe´s from vb-scripts. The better way would be using a COM-Object. I know the solution from the MSDN (many lines of code) but does anyone know a *simple* API (eg. a Shell-api), that does the same thing like runas -> use the environment and profile from the logged-on user, but has the rights of another user (like administrator).
ps.: I know you can give a password to runas, when you use /netonly, but in this case you have no local rights!
has anyone an idea ?
thx, martin

Hello, my computer is running incredibly slow at time and I think I figured out why.. whenever it tries to find a file type or create a new file I think it searches my network and takes FOREVER. I noticed this when i tried to open a folder with a word perfect document, and it hung for almost a minute. is there any way to disable extended searching for file types?
thanks

Hi guys, hope there are a few networking gurus online today. I have two machines, a Win2K box and an XP box. I set up the Win2K box with a static IP address and configured it as a DHCP and DNS server.
When I first boot up the Win2K and XP boxes, the XP box gets a valid IP from the DHCP server. In addition running "nslookup" on the XP box shows that all is well.
However, after a few seconds of being able to access the default share on the Win2K box from the XP box (with me so far?) I get an error message on the XP box stating that the network connection is no longer available. Running "nslookup" on the XP box now returns the infamous
"DNS request timed out"
"timout was 2 seconds"
I'm also unable to ping the Win2K box by name (obviously) OR by IP address. It's like suddenly the DNS server doesn't exist.
Mind you, I'm unable to ping the XP box from the Win2K box either. Soon as I reboot the Win2K box though, everything is fine until I again dare to browse across the network. Back to square one.
Any ideas?

I wish I could help, but all I can do is commiserate. I've had Win2K Server running DNS for over a year, and it's never worked correctly. I've read books, online articles, every single "solution" in the MS Knowledge base, yet nothing works. It can't find anything if I use it instead of my ISP's DNS, and it seems to be at the root of the problem of the server freezing up every few days. A reboot restores everything, and the DNS even seems to work for a while, but it shortly begins malfunctioning again. Just out of curiosity, are you getting a ton of NetLogon 5774 errors in the Event log?

Nope, I clear the Event Log and it remains clean as a whistle. It's just that all of a sudden I'm unable to contact my DNS server after a few seconds of browsing. It's totally frustrating. I've even done a step by step configuration using Mark Minasis' excellent book on Windows 2000 server. Nothing helps. I've ruined one mouse already after slamming it against the wall in frustration.
Setting up a DNS server is not rocket science, especially when the "network" is only 2 PC's big and not connected to the internet in any way.
I just don't know.

Must be nice! I clear mine every two days, as it fills completely with 5774 errors.
You're right, it's not rocket science, and it shouldn't be hard at all, especially with your configuration! Mine is similar, two hosts (though one is rarely switched on), but I have a dual-homed server with one card on the LAN and the other on the Internet. I set up DNS using the automatic settings created by the windows installer, including the Default-Site zones that not one of the books on the subject mentions. I'm tempted to create another zone and configure it manually, then delete the defaults, but I'm chicken...
Good luck!
