Perhaps a miniature version of SourceSafe over web is available in GotDotNet Workspaces also. This ActiveX Control may be helpful for you too, since it provides a very similar interface like Microsoft Visual SourceSafe.

Hi!

How about using Flash? You say "applet" and to me that means Java. But really a Java Applet is total overkill if all you want to do is play some music. With Flash it is really easy, just open up Flash, import the WAV/MP3, create a button and assign a Play action to the button pointing to the imported music file. It is also easy to host in the HTML page.

How do I do flash?
Is a flash plugin wider available than whatever you need to run a JAVA applet?
Weren't you the guy against flash?  (I guess only "complete flash sites", right?)

Couple ways.
You can buy Macromedia Flash MX (or if you are dodgy use the trial version)
You can also use Swift, another Flash dev tool.
It is really quite simple, if you can handle C++/VS.NET/q-basic you can do Flash. I can whip up a Flash file with a button which plays some music for you if you want

Debatable. I don't know the hard answer to that. However Flash is truly everywhere. When producing your Flash file export it to Flash 5 format and not Flash MX/6.0 as that is still distributing itself.
I would confidently recommend Flash for it's wide distribution (though you get nuts like John Simmons who won't even let JavaScript run on their computers.)

Flash is like VB; It has it's uses. It can be used well and it can be abused. It is just a tool.

Here's some background:
We want to demo listening tests on our web site - basically "can you hear the difference": it's always between a "perfect" sample and one of ca. 10 "modified" ones.
Ideally, I'd "preload" the sound files (without the user seeing their names - and also, not seeing which one takes longer to load and which is already in the cache).
And ideal UI would be two buttons to sdwitch between "Sample A", and "Sample B"
Is it possible to employ the cache - i.e. not download each sound file every time in this scenario? First the "perfect" sample is always the same, second, the user is likely to go back to a previously heard sample.

I honestly do not know wether Flash caches resources internally. SWF files themselves to cache fine though, so you could seperate all the mp3s into seperate SWF files and display them alongside each other as neccesary. Then already loaded files will just come from the cache and not have to be downloaded again.
The rest of what you are saying is easy enough. Flash is quite powerful (can you believe I connected Flash to SQL the other day? Hectic stuff.)

IMHO - Flash is still the only way on the web to get your content to look exactly like you want it ... and only have to do (write) it one time. Not to mention the ease of making incredible mutlimedia websites, the use of components, vector graphics for sweet scalability ... etc, etc, etc.
Web standards are a great thing but I just wish there was a "standard" web browser that actually did everything in the standards.

Well first off I can whip out of my bag of tricks 50 reasons why Flash is bad (binary, not a standard, owned by one company, poor accesability etc. etc.) so I don't think Flash is in anyway the correct technology for us to use to create entire websites.
Macromedia.com shows us that a combination of Flash and HTML is the way to go, that site is damned good IMO. Also funny to see how when they re-launched it was 99% Flash. People bitched, it did not work, people moaned, it was terrible to use. Now by beta 4 they have gone to using more HTML than Flash.
As for the web in general; We are trying to do in 4 years what the rest of the IT industry still has not done in 20 (cross platform environment? Does not exist yet.) Plus we are trying to do it not to a few hundred users at a time, but to hundreds of millions of very demanding users who expect the system to work as of yesterday.
Also you mention "your content to look exactly like you want it" well I could go on for 100 pages (with many links to Zeldman) about why that is exactly what we should NOT be aiming for, pixel precision is bad.
Anyway. I get frustrated too. But last week I coded up a simple enough website (20 pages or so) in a single day using HTML and CSS which worked in all modern browsers and worked damned well. I was so pumped, so the frustration is off set when you get things right.

If you don't want to use Flash or java applets, etc., why not just use the following:
<bgsound balance="0" id="Sounder" loop="1" src="" volume="0">
and then a handler fcn
function setAudio(audioFile) {
Sounder.src = audioFile;
}

Is there a way to get around the 128KB size limit when caching data on the client-side using the userData behaviour? Otherwise is there a way to save an XML document onto the client-side machine for cross session access?

on second thoughts, although might not be approprate for your app...
try and use an IFRAME or a frame of 0 width and use insertAdjacentHTML to write and read from it.
you can even dynamically write the IFRAME by doing something like:
<br />
document.body.insertAdjacentHTML('beforeEnd','<iframe id=myPage width=0 height=0></iframe>');<br />
then you can use:
<br />
myPage.document.body.innerHTML('YOUR XML CODE HERE');<br />
After that you acess it read it or rewrite it...

Thanks - I am doing something like that to persist the XML across the whole application. The problem comes in when they login or logout and they need to download the file to start with. The XML is 400K and it doesn't change very often. I was hoping that there would be a way to persist the data on the client-side between sessions so they wouldn't have to download it every time.
I think I can do it using multiple frames and pages (and hence multiple userData behavior's), but I was hoping there would be a more elegant solution.

Well, if it is a intranet Internet Explorer only app why don't you try to do something wich ActiveX.
400K is a lot of dada. Do you really need all that on the client?

this should work perfectly fine if there is no problem in your session but there is one important distinction which you are missing:
Now at clinet side
<script LANGUAGE=VBSCRIPT>
'--This is not working for example
MsgBox <%=list(0)%>
</script>
This is not a client side code it runs on your server and value of <%=list(0)%> fills up on the server side.

even you guys insist that these tags accept relative sizes. the only sizes i can get it to accept are ones in pixels. using relative sizing makes them disappear.

I thought that it is Header ('location : URL'); But restriction says.. it should be the first piece of the code in the page. So... I am struck... please help...

Yes that is the way to do it. It sends header information to the browser, all of which must be sent before there is any output (graphics, text, etc.) actually sent. Treat it the same as you would a cookie.
Basically, what this means is that you have to handle all of your redirects at the top of the page.

Hopefully someone can help me...I'm creating this game...it's kind of like a create a story thing...and when the user clicks on a button it moves on to the next skit. Well, instead of moving onto the next skit, it's will keep playing the first skit. Does anyone know what actions have to be assigned?
