hi,
I installed .net on Windows 2000 Server. While Installing i checked that all the options are ticked. but still I am getting this error :
Error while trying to run project: Unable to start debugging on the web server. Server side-error occurred on sending debug HTTP request.
Make sure the server is operating correctly. Verify there are no syntax errors in web.config by doing a Debug.Start Without Debugging. You may also want to refer to the ASP.NET and ATL Server debugging topic in the online documentaion.
Would you like to disable future attempts to debug ASP.NET pages for this project?
Can anyone help me out.

My brother and I were trying to share one of my WinXP folders over the internet. Can it be done? I have it set up as a shared folder. How does he access it from his PC, to download my files and etc. Is there a direct way, or do we need an FTP client?
Please help.

Interesting thought... I've never tried it. At a minimum you'd have to know each other's IP address, and he would need an account on your computer. You could stick the folder in IIS and let him access it that way, but making the actual connection is something I haven't tried in XP. A few years ago I had no trouble connecting to and using the server at work from home, but then I had a valid logon, and I don't recall the details of how I did it. Open up My Network Places, click the Add wizard and see what happens. Perhaps a combination of IP address and share name will be enough to make the link.

I've just received a message telling me that a computer at 10.2.x.x is trying to contact the SNMP Server here, and I can't imagine why. That's not even supposed to be a routable IP address, so it must be on the local net here in town. What in the world does the SNMP Server do that might interest a hacker?
Is there any good reason to run it at all? I've blocked it with a firewall and nothing has broken yet. I realize that it's used for managing remote computers, but I haven't found a lot of info about just what it does and how it works. What kind of risk does it present?
[EDIT]
The plot thickens - the remote MAC address is the one on my ISP's gateway server, but the IP address associated with it is no longer correct. ARP reports the correct IP address for that MAC address, but the packets coming in are tagged with the 10.2.x.x IP. How entertaining!

SNMP is Simple Network Management Protocol. You use it to manage networks
I haven't used it, but many routers use it to allow configuring them remotely. You should activate only services you use, if you don't use it, remove it. You could try shutting it down and whatching if the network still works. If someone complains, it's your problem

The information about the commputer like sysadmin / location / performace data etc. might be interesting, depending on your config you can completly manage you computer with snmp eg. shutdown start stop services apply new firewall rules .....
For some information take a look into http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1157.txt
or http://www.openview.hp.com/
if does not need this service deinstall it, if you have products like HP OpenView or IBM Tivoli you will need this

Does anyone here use any external utility to backup in linux? My boss wanted me to explore around with samba and linux to see how easy it would be to set up a file server with domain logons, and i've got that down pretty good.
However, i've been googling, and the best i can find is to either manually do it with a tar command every time i wanna do it, or use AMANDA.
I just want to backup user directories (everything in /home).
Whats the best way to do this?

You can make your own script with bash and tar + gzip and then "cron" or "at" it.

i already did that, but my c++ knowledge of linux time isn't good enough. I'd have to make a program that checks the time every so often and runs the tar command if the time is correct. but i don't really want that, it seems it would be a resource hog.

No, what i meant is you can use a bash script running with cron.
Cron is a daemon that runs programs at specific times, depending on what you put in the conf file. Check the manpages, do a: "man cron" from the shell and you will learn how to use it. Then you only have to write a script, something like this (I don't remember the tar syntax):
#!/bin/sh
tar cvf backup.tar /home
Then you write it to a file, say backup.sh and perhaps chmod it to o+x so you can execute it from the shell.
It's been a long time since I don't use linux, so I almost forgot many commands.

I have a Dell GX1 next to my desk currently doing nothing. It has a Celeron 466Mhz CPU, 320MB SD-RAM, SB PCI64 and 2 x 6.4 GB Quantum HDD's I have managed top shoehorn in. I have a copy of Red Hat 9 sitting here which I plan to install. I'm doing this for the experience since my computer related job is hoping to start installing Linux servers in several of their SME clients.
I want to use this server to run mail, FTP, web and file sharing servers for my internal network. I wouldn't mind trying to get it to mimic some Primary Domain Controller functions as well.
From my minimal experience with the wizard installs of Red Hat it creates 3 partitions
boot - 100MB approx.
swap - 2 x RAM approx.
root - whats left on the HDD.
Since I am running 2 HDD's I need to split the partitions for best usage. It makes sense to me that I would put boot and root on HDD-1 while swap and some other partition would go on HDD-2. To do this I would have to manually create the partitions but have no idea what other partition I can create.
Anyone have opinions or links on the best partition split for my 2 HDD's?
Anyone know if it is possible to use a Linux server for Windows PDC purposes?
Any recommendations on what extra packages I should look at installing besides those automatically selected by the Server install?
A Windows Server is out of the question financially. If you insist being a twat and telling me to use Windows 2003 Server by alls means purchase one on my behalf and send it too me. I will provide my PO Box for your convenience.

You should have 1 partition for root in disk 1, 1 partition for user data in disk 2 (mounted on /home), 1 partition for /var in disk 2 (mounted on /var), 1 swap partition it's good if you are short of memory, so i think you could have a 512MB swap partition and that will be just fine. The /var mounted partition should have its own disk (you can share the disk with /home) as this directory is used for variable data that gets changed all the time. You should have a /tmp mounted partition too in disk 1. This way, you balance disk accesses between the 2 disks and maintain a logic structure of your data. You will know that disk 1 only keeps programs and temp data (your configuration too) and disk 2 contains almost all data.
I hope this helps you take a decision.

Hello,
We've bought a server for our enterprise and we want to install linux redhat 8 as it is supposed to be the OS recommended by HP for that server.
NOTE:
We have tried to install DEBIAN and FEDORA before and FEDORA doesn't recognize any HDD and DEBIAN also have problems trying to start.
The main problem seems that happen because the server has an ATA RAID integrated in the main board.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
After some desesperation here trying to install something, we discovered that after half an hour the red hat installation continues and detects all the HDDs. the strange thing is that it needs time lapses of 20 minutes (more or less) to finish each operation. This is frightening me, do you know if this is normal?
thank you in advance.

How does one go about obtaining a "Compliance Report" that tells what functions (meaning, API's, SDK's, etc.) are excluded from running on a particular MS Operating System?
Thanks for any insight.

Another PC broken, another Norton product... [maybe]
I spent half the day trying to fix a XP PC today with Norton Internet Security installed. Interesting product, and one I haven't seen before. I found and removed two viruses before doing anything else (the online scanner at SARC is a lifesaver for people who catch one because they forgot to renew). Then I started exploring.
The customer's complaint that "I can't use the Internet" was obviously ridiculous, since I had no trouble running the online scan. So I asked her to show me what she means. She went to one of her online financial services without trouble, then tried to log in. IE reported a DNS error. On to the next site - same thing, the front page is okay, but login is impossible. This is getting interesting, I thought, as I started tracing through the process of logging on to a secure website. I tried a few of my own favorites and had the same result, so I hypothesized that IE was blocking https connections. Then I tried one that uses https but without a cgi-bin directory in the path and it worked. Scratch that idea. I checked settings in IE, played with security zones, but nothing helped.
That's when I finally found Norton in her programs menu. I tried running it, and sure enough, though it was current, everything in the control panel was disabled, and I couldn't change any of the settings. A little research turned up the fact that this problem is known to occur with McAfee software on XP machines, but I found no mention of Norton IS being a problem. Meanwhile back at the ranch I did some searching at the Symantec site and found instructions for enabling the Supervisor account ( I have to uninstall/reinstall the entire product, then reregister it ), which I think will then allow me to configure the firewall software. But I'm still not convinced that this is what is blocking logins.
Has anyone else ever encountered these weird symptoms on an XP machine? Any other ideas out there? And while I'm at it, does XP have a Repair option on the installation CD? I noticed that her Help system doesn't work anymore - some viruses wipe that out - and I'd like to repair it without using System Restore (she has no restore points), and without damaging her installed software. Thanks for any clues!

Yes it does, but in my experience you need a "restore floppy" whatever that may be... AFAIK you need to have created this before problems showed up, but I don't know, I've never used repair, so I'm not sure what it does in the line of settings and installed programs. My guess is it'll be no problem, but I'm not sure.
