Thanks for the response. You seem to know about this so could you help me out here?
I've read about this stuff of copying the first 512 bytes, but it doesn't seem to make sense. Won't it corrupt my NTFS partition? If you could give me a few points or link me to a decent article, it would be great.
Plus, I got the strange feeling I'm posting on the wrong website... any suggestions?
Thanks.

Nope, it won't. You are copying 512 bytes of secondary partition.
To do this:
boot up in linux. If you're running X-Windows open console (as root) and type
dd if=/dev/hda2 of=/tmp/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
(provided /dev/hda2 is your linux partiton, if you have separate hard disk, it might be /dev/hdb1)
This will copy the boot sector of the linux partition.
Now, copy this file onto a floppy disk
Provided that floppy disk is mounted in /mnt/floppy execute the following
cp /tmp/bootsect.lnx /mnt/floppy or
mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
if floppy is not mounted.
(in here make sure /mnt/floppy directory exists)
Boot in WinXP
Copy bootsect.lnx from floppy to the C:\
Open boot.ini file.
It should look something like:
-----------------------------
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows 2000 Professional"
-------------------------------
Add this line to the end of boot.ini
C:\BOOTSECT.LNX="Linux Rocks"
Save and Close.
That's it, reboot your WinXP and there ya go.
Note: This assumes that you've installed lilo on your secondary partition. For how to do that, you might want to read lilo man page.

Venet.

Thanks a lot. I tried that, but whenever I try to boot to RHL, the system restarts. My config is a little wierd:
Partition 1: Drive C NTFS--System
Partition 2: Linux /boot
Partition 3: Linux root (beyond LILOs 1,024 cylinder limit)
Partition 4: Linux Swap
Partition 5: Drive E NTFS--Boot (don't ask why, I can't figure it out)
So, I installed LILO to the /boot partition and used dd, but it didn't work.
Argh! Why must NT hijack my MBR?!

Ok try this command
lilo -s ./bootsect.lnx
It should do the same thing as in my previous post.

Can you get into Linux at all ?
You might want to try booting from the Linux CD, if you haven't created any bootable floppies and then execute the above command.
Let me know how you get on.

Thanks a lot for the reply, but I'm gonna have to wait a bit. I tried a third-party bootloader (Bootmagic or something) and it fried my MBR. XP refused to load and RHL simply restarted my system. RHL setup said that my disk geometry is messed up. Didn't know what that meant but it didn't sound good. Well, now I'm back to Win98 and my parents aren't too keen on Linux, so I'll just put XP on this machine and try out Linux again in college. A few days was enough to get me super-excited about projects like Gnome and Mono. Programmer's paradise!

So, I needed to install RHL 7.1 for academic reasons. I deleted one of my extra NTFS partitions and installed RHL into it. The thing is, I installed LILO to the MBR. RHL setup didn't detect my XP boot partition. Manually adding it to lilo.conf results in an error: NTLDR not found. What have I done? How do I fix it? Thanks.

well lets see.. sounds like LILO screwed the MBR . put in the XP cd and go to the recovery console... do:
fixmbr
and
fixboot [drive]
(in anything lower than 2K than you would use: fdisk /mbr)
---------------------------
after this, if it still does not work, try copying NTLDR from another xp computer or somewhere... to the [drive]:\ (root dir.)
good luck

Before you do that, login to Linux and configure your LILO to be placed at the beginning of your Linux partition (not MBR). Than copy LILO to a floppy disk (with dd command), restore your Win XP, copy the file from the floppy to C:\, and add another line to boot.ini. This way, you will be able to boot to either XP or Linux.

Okay, I have multple computers running XP connected to a server machine running Windows 2000 Adv Server with two lan cards, one for the local net and another for the broadband internet connection with Internet Connection Sharing enabled on the broadband connection.
Now, I can run a simple e-mail program that will send mail out via SMTP to the server targetted in the e-mail message "To" field. This works fine on any of the machines on the local lan and the message goes anywhere on the Internet I wish to send it. When I run this same program on the server machine (that has just had the OS freshly installed) I keep getting an error message:
ERR An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host
That happens regardless of where it is sent.
When the same program is ran on any of the local net machines, it sends the message any where on the Internet without a problem.
Any clues why it would work on the local machines but the server would choke and kick back that error? The message are still being sent through that machine by the local machines over the ICS?

Hi,
I'm trying to use a link like
[a href="\\server\mailarchive\mymail.eml"]mymail[/a]
to open a mail saved as .eml in Outlook Express.
double-clicking the .eml file in Windows explorer does as it should (start OE, and open the .eml for viewing, the command line is msimn.exe /eml:%1)
Using a link in a web page (as given above) displays the mail body directly in IE (however, I can't access attachments etc.)
Where/how can I change this, to open the file directly in OE?
TIA
Peter

Do you have ZoneAlarm, or any other PC Firewall running?
eml was the extension that nimda used to propogate (spelling?) itself a few months back. So, alot of firewalls, or antivirus software blocks execution of that extension.
Hope that helps.

No, nothing of that. IE seems to recognze them as "can be displayed in-place", like it does/can do with Office documents, or Acrobat .PDF's. (Acrobat reader has an option to turn this off, so I hope I can find the same for OE)

I wrote some software and tested it on about 5 different PCs, all with different hardware configurations and varying Windows operating systems. After correcting a few bugs and taking care of platform independent problems, I thought the software was ready to roll. So, I wrapped it up and got it out there. However, now that it is available, I'm finding that it doesn't run correctly on MOST of the PCs that people are trying to run it on. What is the deal? How can I guarantee that my software will work??? I used a Microsoft compiler on a Microsoft Operating System using only Microsoft libraries. My software is the buggiest piece of !@#*@$. Doesn't it make sense that if it works 100% on one PC, that it should do the same on any other? Please crawl into a corner and die, Microsoft. Anybody have any advice for me??? How do I test my program in a way that I can be sure that it will work on the majority of other peoples' computers???

Link statically.
Test it on fresh-installs.
Use VMWare for testing.

Don't write buggy code?
I have no problem at all creating software for 98/Me/NT4/W2K/XP. We dropped 95 for some API reasons.
Chances are you are depending on versions of DLLs that you shouldn't. Many times this is COMCTL32 (which is well documented so you only have yourself to blame.) Are you depending on SHLWAPI? Also not available on all versions of the operating systems and also well documented.
You depending on them having IE6 installed?
MDAC?
MFC?
CRTL?

I'm sure you can only install on a server, for example W2K Server.

You can install MSDE instead of SQL Server on your client machine. MSDE is the desktop version of SQL Server and is rather nice for developing applications targetted at SQL Server.

Hi CP,
This one's a little embarassing I enabled the "Auto-logon" feature on my Win2k box about 4 months ago (after re-installing the OS). I thought it'd be a great idea to do this 'cuz it'll be ready to go after I boot. Now I would like to use PSTools to do some remote administration from work, BUT I forgot the password. Does anyone know of any password recovery tools that I can use.
TIA
